Overview

Children and Their Families: The Continuum of Care provides a unique interdisciplinary perspective that underscores the nurse's role in planning, coordinating, and working with all members of a pediatric health care team. It shows students how to make critical judgments and assessments to manage the care of children in a variety of community settings, including homes, schools, and medical centers. From infancy through adolescence, this text thoroughly covers the health promotion, surveillance, and maintenance needs of children. In this edition, threaded case studies follow a community of pediatric clients and continue throughout the chapter to show the interrelated dynamics of pediatric nursing care.

A companion Website includes journal articles, NCLEX®-style chapter review questions, a Spanish-English audio glossary, Watch and Learn videos, a fluids and electrolytes tutorial, and much more.

The book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations.

Description: This overview of nursing care of pediatric clients and their families spans the healthcare continuum from wellness to death, covering psychosocial issues for this population. Readers will find a conceptual organization of childhood health issues as well as useful application tools. This updates the first edition of 1998.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students and nurses in a variety of practice settings a comprehensive book addressing the healthcare issues of children and their families. The authors intend to provide a knowledge base that promotes assessment and critical judgments of students and nursing professionals, objectives they thoroughly meet.
Audience: Nursing students and nursing professionals tasked with the healthcare of children and their families are the intended audience. The authors are practitioners and instructors in the field of pediatric nursing.
Features: In addition to the traditional review of growth and development, this book describes developmental and biologic variations occurring throughout childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Each chapter addresses a focused health history and physical assessment and briefly discusses diagnostic criteria and treatments before providing a comprehensive nursing care plan and general information.
Assessment: This book is a well-written and organized resource for nursing students and nurses caring for children and their families. The organization makes it extremely user friendly. This second edition is justified as an update in sources is essential.
