Editorial Reviews

Kathleen Simon
This is a comprehensive text covering traditional children's healthcare concerns. It also focuses on interdisciplinary care in a variety of settings in the community. The purpose is to provide comprehensive information on children's healthcare, including current content related to children's healthcare concerns as well as care pathways and nursing intervention classifications. It is written for nursing students and practicing nurses. The content is applicable to settings from home to clinics to inpatient settings. The content is well presented with color illustrations to aid in understanding. Numerous figures and tables highlight important information. The chapters have a consistent presentation which aids in use. They include special features such as care paths, teaching intervention plans, nursing intervention classifications, and clinical judgment questions. This book offers comprehensive child healthcare content in a clear presentation with many illustrations and tables for emphasis and clarification. It is a quality alternative to other well known child healthcare texts for nurses.
Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Theresa M. Bacon, MSN (University of New Mexico Hospital)
Description: This overview of nursing care of pediatric clients and their families spans the healthcare continuum from wellness to death, covering psychosocial issues for this population. Readers will find a conceptual organization of childhood health issues as well as useful application tools. This updates the first edition of 1998.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students and nurses in a variety of practice settings a comprehensive book addressing the healthcare issues of children and their families. The authors intend to provide a knowledge base that promotes assessment and critical judgments of students and nursing professionals, objectives they thoroughly meet.
Audience: Nursing students and nursing professionals tasked with the healthcare of children and their families are the intended audience. The authors are practitioners and instructors in the field of pediatric nursing.
Features: In addition to the traditional review of growth and development, this book describes developmental and biologic variations occurring throughout childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Each chapter addresses a focused health history and physical assessment and briefly discusses diagnostic criteria and treatments before providing a comprehensive nursing care plan and general information.
Assessment: This book is a well-written and organized resource for nursing students and nurses caring for children and their families. The organization makes it extremely user friendly. This second edition is justified as an update in sources is essential.
