Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Designed as a literary history of key children's books dealing with twentieth century warfare, this publication is an outstanding resource for parents, librarians and teachers. What more compelling subject is there for educating younger readers about topics of loss and trauma than war and its manifold effects? The authors focus primarily upon the two World Wars, and within this twentieth century context, most selections deal with subjects germane to Great Britain and other distant fronts. The authors also do an outstanding job of tracing the evolution of writing about the World Wars. Beginning with works compiled during the time period of those enormous conflicts, the authors demonstrate how perspectives about warfare have changed across the decades. Worthy individual books are presented and are accompanied by comprehensive plot summaries and analysis. Readers are given a broad range of compelling books that address central themes in those two wars. However, what the authors of this thoroughly researched and well-written book accomplish is to synthesize some of the central themes presented in children's literature of this genre. Through their analyses, we come to see that high quality books written about warfare can help children understand the realities and human costs of war. Such knowledge may help future generations contemplating military actions that, once taken, will forever change the lives of millions. 2001, Continuum, $50.00 and $14.99. Ages 18 up.
