The treasures presented are those that were offerings to gods (ancient civilizations), war booty, pirate loot, riches from the deep (shipwrecks), stolen treasure (Crusades, Nazi thefts), and romantic rumors (Atlantis, Captain Kidd's hoard). The two-page spread for each topic within these sections is presented in newspaper format, with richly colored illustrations. It is a good addition to a resource collection, but not an in-depth study.

Gr 4-7A colorful, oversized survey of discoveries of treasures of all sortsofferings to the gods, pirate booty, and items lost in war or natural disasters. Each double-page spread addresses a single site or event, placing it in its historical and geographical context. Photographs, drawings, maps, and diagrams show the treasure, tomb, or site, and sometimes an archaeologist. Some pages overwhelm readers with too many illustrations and lengthy captions, but the book's overall organization is logical. The amount of information on each of the treasures is limited; but basic facts are separated from rumors and/or legends.
