Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Concise prose aided by a multitude of detailed illustrations and photos make this book of Old and New Testament stories a treasure for children. Key Bible stories, accompanied by maps, quotes from Scripture, pictures and definitions to explain certain passages, provide a wealth of information. For example, in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, the angels admonish Lot and his wife not to look behind them as they flee the burning cities. When Lot's wife turns to watch the destruction raining down, she is instantly transformed into a pillar of salt. An inset on this page shows salt clusters in the Dead Sea and explains that the large amounts of salt prevent anything from growing there. The clusters serve as a reminder of the terrible fate suffered by Lot's wife. The book also provides two excellent sections—"Introduction to the Bible" and "Who's Who in the Bible Stories." This book would be an asset to both family and school libraries. A minor criticism is the small print size used for the text. A ribbon bookmark is attached to the binding of the book. 2000, DK Publishing, $12.95. Ages 5 to 10. Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati
Ilene Cooper
Considering the spectacular graphics of most Dorling Kindersley books, this illustrated Bible may be something of a disappointment. The book combines small photographs with rather listless pastel artwork. The color photos show artifacts, clothing, architecture, and various plants and animals of biblical times, among many other items. The big draw here is not the art, but rather the fluent retellings and the chapters of background information that place the stories in their historical and geographical contexts. Topics include life in Canaan, the land of the New Testament, and the early Church. A comprehensive volume that should find a place on religion shelves.

    Marvelous!

Five stars!! I am a new Christian (AGE 33!) and bought this to learn 'about' the Bible before studying the actual Bible. It puts everyhting in perspective, it made me more interested in church because I feel more a part of it because of the knowledge gained from this book. Even the first page gives you the 'make up' of the Bible and it's derivements. It is written more in an adult vocabulary. What helped me most is the family trees from the Bible that puts all these chapters of the actual Bible in perspective. It has maps and pictures of EVERYTHING! Love it! Can't put it down. I will soon read it to my children.

    Awesome Resource

I was introduced to this book through our Sunday School at Church. They are using it as this year's study. The storys and illustrations make it very easy to look at, read, and share with my grandson - 8 yrs. Actually my 8 mth old granddaughter reacts to the reading of the storys and to the colorful illustrations.

Love this Book...Use it in my classroom.

I was looking for an easy to read, easy to understand Bible for my 9 year olds in my Sunday School class. This book was recommended to me, and the whole class loves it. We use it every Sunday with our lessons. It has nice pictures and words the kids can understand and they become absorbed in the stories. The price was good on barnesandnoble.com and bought each member of the class one.

Great Devotion Bible or Home School Study Aide

We read one story a day out of this Bible, but my kids would prefer I read ten. The stories are written a few steps above a yound child's Bible. The stories themselves are well-written and easy to follow. Each story is usually on a two-page spread. The story is well illustrated with explanations for the illustrations. The big bonus is that the margins are filled with photos and facts related to the stories. My kids love the "facts and information" and we spend a lot of time on these as well. My kids are ages 6 and 8. Would not recommend for younger than 5 as the text is too detailed.

    Informative and exciting !!

It's an excellent book for introduction to the bible for the young minds. The book provides a lot of additional information assisted with beautiful illustration. My daughter is too young to read the book by herself. I got it so that I can read it and show her the pictures on there. I would highly recommend this.

    Excellent children's bible

I was really picky in selecting this bible. I wanted one for my child that was accurate, covered the whole bible, and not only told summarized stories but was educational was well. I found all of that and more in this book. It shows likely pictures that follow the events and give the book, chapter, and verse for reference. This is something she can definitely grow up with.

    A Great Children's Story Bible

This is a great children's story bibe. The stories are clear and concise and follow the text in easy English. Definately made into stories, but as accurate as any I have seen. The pictures are not over-dramatic, but clear. The best part of this book is the sidebars that contain culture of the period, acheological finds from the time and period and historical notes. I believe this book will call the curious child into it. It is also super for classroom use and for creating lessongs. The scripture texts that the stories are drawn from, (often multiple texts) make this book useful for a wide variety of ages.

It's very educational for the beginner!

I'm no book critic so my opinion may not count as much as others, however our five year old son doesn't want to go to sleep every night with out reading this book. I'd highly recommend it. 'Stiffness' of pictures is less important than the education gained.

    Not Recommended for reading together

This book is very small and the print is EXTREMELY small! I returned the book because I couldn't read it and show it to my daughter at the same time.

    Wonderful

This is the third Bible I have bought for my children and this is the only one they want me to read. The pictures and wonderful and it's very well written for children. I love the maps and actual pictures of the area in which the Bible is speaking of. My son is very visual so this has strengthen his curiousity and knowledge of the Bible.

    Prints are very small

Otherwise a great bible for children. We like the illustrations and stories, and it is a handy bible for children to carry. Actual size is 5.5 x 6.75 inches. I was expecting it to be bigger. The prints are small as a result.

    Great Book for Adults Too!!

My husband and I know very little about God, and we wanted to educate our daughter a little bit. We are reading it to familiarize ourselves with the bible - it has been a quick easy text. This book is definetly not for a young child - it would be tough to read (we have a preschool-age child.)

    Wonderful and educational!

I cannot describe just how wonderful this Bible storybook is. Not only does it retell those classic stories, it contains special notes, giving the reader some information about things concerning each story (ex. life during Bible times). With illustrations combined with color photographs, this is recommended to the whole family.

    Great for kids

I like this book for gifts. Yes, the pictures are small, but when I want a picture of a camel, I go to another book. I feel that the pictures support the text and the other illustrations amplify the text and help children recall things that they already know, or lead them to research answers to new questions. There is a great deal of information to cover in such a few pages.
