Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ilene S. Goldman
Good Bibles for children are hard to find. Typically they are too facile or made unnecessarily complex with too much information. This one is neither. While it reduces each Biblical tale to a short format, typically no more than two pages, it retains the key elements of the story, enough to provoke the kind of questions typical of Torah study. Cultural, geographical, and historic points are briefly expanded in the margins. Appendices give brief biographies of "Who's Who in the Bible Stories" as well as explanations of "Places in the Bible Stories." This might become a family's quick shelf reference or weekly Shabbat storybook of choice. The accompanying CD is, however, a bit disappointing. While teachers have been asking children's' authors for multimedia, one imagines they want more than a simple CD that provides spoken text for a selection of entries. Certainly this CD will be helpful, especially for a family in which listening works better than reading out loud, but the CD offers no additional material. Given the potential of CD and DVD to enhance a book, the CD with this book is an unimaginative add-on. Reviewer: Ilene S. Goldman

Gr 1-6- This is indeed a Jewish Bible, written by Jewish authors, and successful in its inclusion of many popular stories retold in a lively, child-friendly style. Realistic and colorful pencil-drawn illustrations add to the telling, and as a treat for curious minds, the small photographs on the sidebars are really interesting. Readers can get a quick idea of what lentil stew probably looked like ("Esau and Jacob"), the ancient gift of a nose ring ("Isaac and Rebekah"), or archaeological ruins such as the present-day remains of Hezekiah's Tunnel. A corresponding Hebrew translation of each chapter heading opposite the English titles helps authenticate this as a Jewish Bible. The volume would be most appropriate for family use due to the addition of a professionally produced story CD encased in a plastic sleeve within the front cover, which is engagingly read by a pleasant-voiced narrator.-Lisa Silverman, Sinai Temple Library, Los Angeles

my 5.5 yr old is very curious and is really looking forward to getting this book soon. We checked it out at the library beforehand and she really enjoyed it. Most important she liked learning new words and listening to stories of Q. Esther, Ruth, and K. David. I was so impressed by this book, I decided to get it for the holidays!!!
