Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—In this handsomely crafted collection, Pirotta retells 72 stories from the Old and New Testaments, bringing biblical times to life with eloquent detail and lovely imagery. Descriptions of the parting of the Red Sea, wise King Solomon's famous verdict, and Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem are particularly vivid. The author deftly characterizes the people in his stories by attributing believable thoughts, emotions, and dialogue to them. The bravery of Moses, Mary's quiet joy over her betrothal to Joseph, and the turmoil experienced by Judas Iscariot as he follows his path of betrayal will resonate with readers. A corresponding verse from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible introduces each story. Arranged in chronological order, the selections flow easily from one to the next, beginning with the Creation and concluding with Pentecost. The final chapter ends on an inspirational note as the disciples set forth to spread Jesus's message of love throughout the world until "the earth itself echoed with the joy of his salvation." The accompanying color and monochrome pencil illustrations are as lovely as the author's narration. Finely drawn in delicate colors, their gentle beauty paired with the elegant design of the volume enhances the collection's inspirational tone. Supplementary reference materials make this volume useful as well as beautiful. Although not as comprehensive as Murray Watts's The Bible for Children (Good Bks., 2002), this title provides a fine overview of both Old Testament and Gospel stories.—Linda L. Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
Seventy-two Bible stories from creation to Pentecost are embroidered to add information and emotion. When Pharaoh put the Israelites in bondage it says: "So life changed dramatically for Joseph's descendents…Many died in accidents, by the crack of a soldier's whip, or through thirst and exhaustion." When Simon Peter says, "You are the Christ—the Son of the living God." Jesus answers, "You shall be the foundation of my ministry, my church," which is the Roman Catholic interpretation. The Palm Sunday story of Jesus' entrance to Jerusalem concludes: "For carrying Jesus on this one short journey, the donkey would be remembered forever." Information in the Gospels may be combined in the stories. Each story is preceded by a Bible verse. The text is in two columns using gray-blue ink which I found tiring. One artist drew the colored illustrations while the other artist drew the monochrome dark-blue-gray pictures. Both use colored pencils for wonderful, exciting effects. Maps of different periods, a time line, short illustrated biographies of people in the Bible, a glossary, and favorite Bible verses appear at the back. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
