Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-A snapshot view emphasizing the diversity of the state's population and geography. Facts are cursory and scattered throughout the text; three short paragraphs discuss the state's history and the interesting origin of its name. Unfortunately, the content is not logically organized. In addition, the text is sometimes oversimplified: "-you can build a sandcastle on the beach, make a snowman in the mountains, then go down to the desert to see a breathtaking display of early spring wildflowers-all in the same morning." Each page includes at least one full-color, glossy photograph. While the pictures are of above-average quality and depict the ethnic diversity of California's children, it is sometimes difficult to figure out which captions go with which pictures. A map is helpful in locating only some of the sites mentioned in the text. A lack of indexing hampers retrieval of information. The glossary defines some terms but includes others that were not mentioned in the text. Despite some flaws, this book will provide young visitors with an introduction to one of the largest of the 50 states.-Patti Gonzales, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
