Overview

The Music for Little People label was founded more than 15 years ago by Leib Ostrow, whose missions included exposing kids to the music of different countries and cultures. On this compilation, Ostrow fulfills his mission by presenting a broad array of music from other countries. There's quite a bit of cross-pollination, too: the African-American a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock do the "uno, dos, tres" thing with "Counting in Spanish"; they also present "Counting in French," "Japanese," and "Swahili." The Irish Rovers, who are actually from Canada, perform their inexplicable 1971 pop hit "The Unicorn." There are tunes in French, Spanish, Italian, and various African dialects; there's folk diva Joan Baez performing "Kumbaya" and premier children's singer-songwriter Raffi singing his gentle tune of tolerance and understanding, "Like Me and You." A Child's Celebration of the World celebrates both our similarities to and our differences from a multitude of cultures.
