Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Treadway M.Ed.
Books in the colorful "Enchantment of the World Second Series" give historical and current information about a specific country. As a comprehensive social studies series of 150 pages each, students are introduced to local geography, nature, government, cultural traditions, religion, daily life, language, economy, sports, and the arts. They are divided into chapters with additional sections for "Timeline," "Fast Facts," "To Find Out More," "Index," and "Meet the Author." Sharp photographs on most pages combine with key maps, charts, and graphs to bring people and places to life in a personal way. Multiple sidebars add depth to every chapter. Even though there are numerous authors, similar formatting with an engaging approach creates an inviting visit to lands around the globe. Thus, content integration while focusing on a particular country is readily available. For instance in this book, "Chilean Money," "Saving the Salmon," "The National Anthem" (both Spanish lyrics and an English translation are side by side), "Major Holidays and Festivals," "Island Chapels," "Chicago Boys," and several biographies provide valuable insights. Another example is a segment called "Castaway" about the origin of Robinson Crusoe which took place in the Juan Fernandez Islands. It was based on the experiences of Alexander Selkirk who sailed the high seas near Chile in 1704. Today there is Robinson Crusoe Island and Alejandro Selkirk Island named after the real person who indeed survived on minimal island resources for nearly five years. Many interesting discoveries will ensue when learning about different cultures and time periods in this revised series. Additionally, authors discuss how research was conducted for their topic and guide readers to many of the same accessible resources. It is important to note, however, that another book in the "Enchanted World Second Series" entitled Chile was published in 2000 but authored by Sylvia McNair. Careful attention should be given to possible factual inaccuracies in such earlier works. Reviewer: Susan Treadway, M.Ed.
