Children's Literature - Maggie L. Schrock
August fifth, 2010, thirty-three men were trapped in the collapse of Chile's San Jose gold and copper mine. At first, no one knew how many, if any, men survived. To the surprise of the world, seventeen days later, communication was received that all thirty-three men were alive. Controversy ensued as the public discovered the poor conditions of the mine, the lack of follow-through on safety regulations, and the unstable financial situation of the mine's owners. The San Esteban Mining Company could not fund the rescue effort; therefore, the government and several international companies stepped-in to rescue the miners. Unsure how to save the men, three plans were crafted, Plans A, B, and C. All three plans had rough patches, and Plan A had to be thrown out completely. Sixty-nine days later, on October thirteenth, the thirty-three men made the journey to the surface in a bullet-shaped capsule. Although a nonfiction piece, this riveting story captivates the reader's attention. From shocking revelations about the mining company to edge-of-the-seat moments about the miner's diminishing health, the reader cannot put this story down. Graphics, sidebars, and a timeline add to the instructional qualities of this book, as well as the index and glossary. If interested, readers can utilize the additional resources to look up more information. A part of the "Essential Events" series, The Chilean Miners' Rescue is a stand-alone book. Reviewer: Maggie L. Schrock
