First of all, Chillout Mix, Vol. 3 should be commended for its spectacular artwork. While the cover image is a passable shot of a comfy chair behind your basic futura-style font, the backside artwork features what appears to be an off-duty lawn gnome relaxing on a beach chair, his cherubic face the picture of chill. Musically, the collection is no slouch -- or, perhaps it is, since it plies a gauzy, downtempo groove that's tailor-made for watching the sun come up after a long night at the club. Boards of Canada, Zero 7, and Kruder & Dorfmeister all contribute inventive, percolating mixes that hit the sweet spot between bliss and beats. Even Radiohead and Underworld ...

Sure, there are a few stinkers, Supreme Beings of Leisure's "Never the Same" being one of them, but for the most part, Chillout Mix, Vol. 3 is slouchier than your average comp of this type, which too often mine grooves that are just plain tired.
