Author Talia Carner has done an excellent job weaving a multi-level tale with a strong human interest. The protagonist, a pop singer Nola Sands, is surprised when a baby is thrust into her arms. But she is more surprised to learn of the duplicity of her own entourage and then of the U.S. government which conspires with the Chinese government to block the adoption and to silence her. Add to this well-researched story the American corporate expansion into the Chinese market, the psychological nuances of a dysfunctional family, the haunting beauty of China, the state of Chinese orphanages--and Nola's own growth throughout the story-- and you have a winner.
