Children's Literature
This entry in an interlocking "The Lands, Peoples, and Cultures" series presents Chinese traditional and performing arts, food, festivals, customs and beliefs, remedies and pastimes in a series of short sections with two or three illustrations per page. Straightforward text is set off with four or five headings per page to assist the reader in locating material, helpful because the index page numbers do not match text nor does the stingy index indicate all entries that might apply to, for instance, "food," a topic which readers will probably research. Pictures are up-to-date, interestingly detailed and captioned, although the captions are frequently not near the picture they explain and one picture is not captioned at all, leaving naive readers to wonder if a pagoda is really a temple. The text describes such items as an abacus or using a potato print in lieu of a woodcut, both of which could use a photograph or a diagram. Still, the book does a good job of presenting aspects of Chinese life in a concise and inviting manner. The glossary rounds up and defines some Chinese words and more general ones, but many Chinese words are defined in context and do not appear either in the index or the glossary. This offers a natural reason for those who study China to create a word wall of discoveries specific to this country. There are no references to other literature or web sites. All in all, this is a flawed but useful text, which will, alongside other reference materials, support a classroom study and interest children in its content. A modest but not very complete index is included. 2001, Crabtree, $20.60 and $7.95. Ages 9 to 13. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
