Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Chinchillas have a range of colors from white to violet. Learn about this furry little rodent's special features: its dense fur, constantly growing incisors, and fragile bones. There are several color photographs of different chinchillas throughout the book; some supportive of the text and others, not. In the chapter "Chinchilla Chests" which is about setting up the chinchilla's habitat; the home shown in the photo does not support the information. Those children who are considering this unusual pet will find helpful information about the responsibilities that are involved in caring for the chinchilla. Some chapter titles clearly state the topic; however, the information is mixed. For instance, the chapter about selecting a chinchilla has a section discussing where and how to purchase one, yet the section related to training the animal seems out of place. Readers who are considering a pet chinchilla may need to do some further research to see if this pet would fit into their lives and whether or not they can handle the responsibilities. There are some web sites listed at the back of the book for further exploration. This book is a part of the "My Pet" series. No consultant was listed. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
