Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Born in China, Wu studied calligraphy under Chien Shi Lin in Hong Kong and has exhibited in Hong Kong, London, Manchester, and Liverpool. She considers Chinese calligraphy a form unlike any other in that it "has captured the artistic urges of people throughout history." When writing a character or a poem, explains Wu, the mind wanders through past centuries and contemplates inner spiritual thoughts before the tip of the brush touches the paper. She teaches the basics of materials and techniques, but the bulk of the book is devoted to individual characters. Rebecca Yue's Chinese Calligraphy Made Easyis excellent for the five classic styles of Chinese calligraphy, but this volume is highly recommended as a compendium of Chinese characters.

    Good for Beginners!

I just recently started learning Chinese, when I came across this book. It definitely is something to have while learning how to speak, read, and write chinese! The characters shown in this book are perfect, both for basic practice AND advanced technique. If you're looking to start a new art form, this is a great starting point.

    Friendly for Beginners
This book is set-up quite nicely. If it were not for the spiral binding, my frequent use would have probably broke the binding! I found the instructions for the character strokes to be clear and concise, which is good for beginners. To some, the 300 characters are adequate, but it had fewer character than I was expecting, which makes it less of a venerable Bible to me. This was the book that I started to learn the art of calligraphy by, but for a true dictionary with thousands of characters and great historical context, I prefer Sacred Calligraphy of the East.
