Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Laura J. Brown
Cultures from all over the world have wonderful celebrations. The New Year is a holiday that is celebrated all around the world. In the United States and many other countries it is celebrated on January first. People in many Asian countries celebrate the Lunar New Year. It falls between January twenty-first and February nineteenth. It is called the Chinese New Year in China. Readers will learn the customs and legends of this holiday. One of the legends is the story of Nian, a terrible dragon. The story of Nian is where many of the traditions of the holiday come from. This holiday is not just celebrated in Asia, but all over the world. The book includes foods that are prepared and songs that are sung, and information about the lantern festival. The Chinese calendar is included and explained, as well as a glossary to explain new terms. It is a fun, colorful, and informative book that readers will enjoy. Part of the "Cultural Holidays" series. Reviewer: Laura J. Brown
