Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
What Jane Goodall is to chimps, Lois Brunner Bastian is to chipmunks. Having observed chipmunks in the "wilds" of New Jersey for more than twenty-five years, Bastion believes "...you can have a real-life adventure with a wild animal right in your own backyard." One of the "Wildlife Conservation Society Books," a series that focuses on scientists at work observing animals in their natural habitats, this book informs as well as delights. The first person narrative is immediate and engaging. Chipmunk "stats" are skillfully woven through the text; interesting facts appear as sidebars. From early March to late October, Bastian chronicles the activities of a female chipmunk and her litter of six. While she touches upon chipmunk courting and mating behaviors, her focus is the female and her offspring. Through Bastian's eyes, readers observe how the female chipmunk rears her young, how the littermates relate to one another and to their environment, and ultimately, how the young are banned from the burrow and take off on their own. Beautiful photographs complement the text. 2000, Franklin Watts, $22.50 and $6.95. Ages 8 up. Reviewer: Ellen R. Braaf
