Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
There’s no improving on perfection—in this case Fleming’s adventure story (featuring the unconventional family Pott and their magically refurbished motorcar) with the original, transcendent Burningham illustrations, first published in 1964. The confiding informality of the storyteller’s voice; the nonstop and immensely child-pleasing adventures; the spunk of young Jeremy and Jemima; and of course the ingenious personality of Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang herself—all combine to make an ideal family read-aloud. This handsome fiftieth-anniversary gift edition is ... so very welcome.

This is why the book holds up, 50 years after its original publication: its sense of the world as an inexplicable but also miraculous place.

Children's Literature - Kristi Bernard
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is the name of a car. But, she is no ordinary car. You see, she has a grand history as a race car and a very famous one at that. She also was a part of a very curious family known as the Potts. They brought her back to life after saving her from the scrap yard. There was Commander Caractacus Pott, his wife Mimsie, and the twins, Jeremy and Jemima. The commander was an inventor and known in his community as "Crack Pot" but he did not mind. The day finally arrived when this modest family came into some good fortune, one of the Commanders inventions had finally paid off. He invented a delicious hard candy that was also an amazing whistle. With the profits from the candy which was sold to Lord Skrumshus, who owned a very famous candy factory, they were able to buy the very special car. The Potts learn how special Chitty is during a traffic jam. With a little help from the cars controls on the dash, controls that mysteriously appeared while the Commander was putting her back together, the Commander was able to push the right buttons and the cars was then able to soar above the ground. The car eventually shows the Potts that she is able to swim. But that is not all, she has her mind set to foil a plan of a few criminals and the Potts discover they are along for the ride in this fantastic adventure. This wonderful middle grade read will have young readers following this adventure with eagerness. Parents and teachers will happily share in the adventure and perhaps revisit the movie.
