Overview

Married to a convert herself, Anita Diamant provides advice and information that can transform the act of conversion into an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth.

Here you will learn how to choose a rabbi, a synagogue, a denomination, a Hebrew name; how to handle the difficulty of putting aside Christmas; what happens at the mikvah (ritual bath) or at a hatafat dam brit (circumcision ritual for those already circumcised); how to find your footing in a new spiritual family that is not always well prepared to receive you; and how not to lose your bonds to your family of origin. Diamant anticipates all the questions, doubts, and concerns, and provides a comprehensive explanation of the rules and rituals of conversion.

As many as five thousand people convert to Judaism each year. Unfortunately, very few resources exist for converts or for their families and communities who will receive them. Choosing a Jewish Life provides advice and information that can transform the act of conversion into an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and of spiritual and intellectual growth. 320 pp. 10,000 print.

Meet the Author

Anita Diamant
Anita Diamant

Anita Diamant's books include The New Jewish Wedding, Living a Jewish Life, and The Red Tent, a novel. She lives in Newton, Massachusetts.

Biography

Anita Diamant is an award-winning journalist and the author of several bestselling novels (The Red Tent, Good Harbor, The Last Days of Dogtown, Day After Night), a collection of essays (Pitching My Tent, and six nonfiction guides to contemporary Jewish life.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Anita Diamont:

"Modern dance concerts inspire me like little else. I'm amazed at the creativity and the range of the human imagination in the human body. Along a similar vein, I tend to prefer contemporary art museums and galleries for the visual/mental kick-in-the-pants. I don't go in expecting to like everything I see; I'm just... looking!"

"I unwind by walking on the beach. Sky, sea, sand, rocks, birds -- the great noisy emptiness. Nothing like it."

"I'd rather be home, or close to home. Traveling around the US or abroad is fascinating, but I lack the bug or gene that inspired people to visit the four corners of the globe. I'm not uncurious, honest. Maybe I'll grow into it..."

Excellent guide for the Jew by Choice

I love this book because not only does it explain the faith traditions of Judaism, it gives examples and ideas of how to integrate these traditions into one's life.

    Good Read

I really enjoyed this book. It was very informative on Reform Judaism, as the author is a Reform Jew. I passed it on to others in my family as an introduction to Judaism.

Highly Recommended for any one converting to Judaism!

This was my travel guide through my own conversion experience. Ms. Diamant writes in detail about the bet din, choosing a Rabbi, mikvah, and brit milah. It is a beautiful book that also helped my family understand what I was going through. This is a must read for anyone thinking about conversion or anyone who loves a new Jew.
