Chopin: Piano Works

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Blair Sanderson
Originally recorded and released in Europe in 1986, this 2004 EMI Classics reissue of Chopin's piano works is more interesting for its gifted performer than for its familiar material. A pianist of extraordinary skill and sensitivity, Rudolf Buchbinder plays most of these pieces fairly close to the vest, with an introspection that suggests an awareness of Chopin's own preference for subdued, subtly veiled interpretations. Rarely does Buchbinder erupt with Lisztian intensity and passion, as he does in the opening "Fantasy Impromptu No. 4 in C sharp minor," the "Polonaise No. 5 in F sharp minor," and the "Scherzo No. 2 in B flat minor." Regrettably, the piano used here sounds quite tinny and harsh at fortissimo, and the listener may be grateful that Buchbinder's greatest fury is limited to these three selections. Most often, though, he performs with delicacy and warmth, and his rubato is fluid but carefully controlled. His understated approach is satisfying and often moving in the three "Nocturnes," the three "Waltzes," and the "Ballade No. 3 in A flat," and the piano's timbres are much rounder at the softer dynamics. EMI's recording is clear and bright, but a little thin on the bass, which also contributes to the occasionally brash sound.
