Barnes & Noble - Benjamin Ivry
Dinu Lipatti died from leukemia at the age of 32. The purity of his playing, its exceptional fluidity and sheer musicality, have rarely been matched in the history of records. If anyone is snobby enough to dismiss Chopin's waltzes as showy or shallow "salon" music, listening to Lipatti's performances should convince them that these pieces have the same musical integrity as anything by Bach. These are not the Chopin waltzes of an old roué like the great Artur Rubinstein, but they live brilliantly on their own terms. The other Chopin works on this disc -- the beautiful Barcarolle, a Nocturne, and a Mazurka -- show Lipatti's mastery of other, more virile and energetic ...

He plays everything with the same absolute integrity and Einstein-like intensity. Irreplaceable.
All Music Guide - Blair Sanderson
Dinu Lipatti recorded Frédéric Chopin's "14 Waltzes" for EMI in July 1950, mere months before his death at age 33. Despite the leukemia that had been diagnosed a few years earlier that had weakened him to the point of canceling international tours, Lipatti still found enough strength to record these pieces in Geneva, Switzerland, and they have been an essential part of his legacy ever since. Even though these performances are a little compressed in sound and limited in resonance, that is not the main thing listeners will notice. What immediately captures the attention and holds the imagination is Lipatti's astonishing playing, so expressively powerful and technically dazzling that one can scarcely think the pianist was ill. Yet all of the qualities for which Lipatti was praised are fully evident here, most clearly in his lightning-fast tempos, precise rhythms, and fluid phrasing. This is an essential album for any collection, and a disc that is sure to win Lipatti admirers for many decades to come.

    the true Chopin pianist

I have recently discovered Dinu Lipatti and immediately fell in love with his beautifully crafted performances of these Chopin waltzes. I have found no other performer thus far that has been so successful in interpreting Chopin as he ought to be, as most players go overboard and play him too romantically, sounding more like a late-night soap opera than a piece of thought-through music. However despite this impeccable precision, the obvious passion of this wonderful composer is certainly not lost on him. The balance, class, and feeling of Lipatti is not often found. I only wonder why he is not more widely known.
