Overview

With nearly 200,000 copies sold in its 25 years, Chosen by God by Dr. R. C. Sproul is a contemporary classic on predestination, a doctrine that isn't just for Calvinists, says Sproul. It is a doctrine for all biblical Christians. In this updated and expanded edition of Chosen by God, Sproul shows that the doctrine of predestination doesn't create a whimsical or spiteful picture of God, but paints a portrait of a loving God who provides redemption for radically corrupt humans. We choose God because he has opened our eyes to see his beauty; we love him because he first loved us. There is mystery in God's ways, but not contradiction.

We choose God because he has opened our eyes to see his beauty. We love him because he first loved us.

Predestination, says R. C. Sproul, isn’t just for Calvinists. It is for all biblical Christians. In this updated and expanded edition of Chosen by God, Sproul shows that the doctrine of predestination doesn’t create a whimsical or spiteful picture of God, but paints the portrait of a loving God who provides redemption for radically corrupt humans. There is mystery in God’s ways, but not contradiction.

Even though Dr. Sproul uses some big words it was a great book on predestination. I would highly recommend it.

Chosen by God was the best book I have ever read in my life, and i am only 17. This book cleared up many of the questions i had about christianity. It also helped me understand that God is holy, he is above all, and the reason he chose me was to make sure that i didnt think of my self higher than God.

***** The most contraversial issue among Christians might not be predestination, but that is certainly one of the main ones. When God began His plans for the world, did He randomly choose some to find salvation through the grace of Christ, or is it all up to us? In this mini-book, the author carefully spells out the three dominant views held by Christians, Augustine's, Pellagianism, and semi-Pellagianism. Though the third is the most dominant view, that does not necessarily make it the true one. Even if you go into this book by holding fast to a contrary belief, before the last page closes, you will find yourself having to consider the other side. Though brief, each word packs a tremendous punch and gives readers much to think about, even too much.

I just finished reading this book about an hour before I wrote this review. The book was great! It was very deep and theological, yet it was written for the lay person. If you have any questions regarding this controversial doctrine I would definitely recommend this book. It is good either for large or small group study and even for single person studies! R.C. Sproul knows how to grab hold of your attention from the first line and hold it untill the last word!! The summaries at the end of each chapter were especially helpful for a better understanding. I just can't say enough of how great this book is. After I finished reading it, I turned to the first page and started again!

As usual, Sproul is masterful at clearing up the typical misconceptions about 'Predestination.' He provides cogent arguments, from the Reformed view, to support this doctrine. One doesn't have to be a 'Calvanist' to be captivated by the fine points made in this book. Top-rate theology at an 'easy-to-understand' level. This book is 'predestined' to be a classic!

Sproul has the knack of making difficult subjects easy to understand, and this book is no exception. It presents the Calvinist viewpoint of predestination in an easy to understand way, at least as easy as this subject can get.

Sproul first discusses the struggle he went though when first confronted with the subject of predestination. As with most people, his natural mind rebelled against the idea of God¿s sovereignty, not ¿free-will,¿ being the final determining factor in who is saved and who is not. But through the influence of John Gerstner, and most of all the Scriptures, Sproul came to accept the Biblical doctrine of predestination.

In this book, Sproul presents some of the main arguments for predestination and the five points of Calvinism in general. He also present and refutes some verses commonly cited against the five points. And he includes many Scripture references along the way. Many more supporting Scriptural references and refutations of proposed contrary verses are contained in the three chapters on this subject in my book Scripture Workbook: For Personal Bible Study and Teaching the Bible.

So if you have just been introduced to the subject of predestination or would like to learn what all the fuss is about, get Sproul¿s book. It is probably the best introduction to this subject you can get. And for help in doing more detailed study on the subject, consult the chapters on this subject in my book.

For anyone interested in the five points of Calvinism, why they are Scriptural and logical, and what the arguments are against them, this book is incredible. I want to order tonnes, just to give away!
