Overview

CHLOE KING MAY BE THE ONE.

Despite a rocky few weeks, Chloe King is starting to get it. She's figured out who she is (a girl with catlike superpowers), where she belongs (at home with Mom), and what she wants to do (chill with her friends).

Yes, she's got funky superpowers, and yes, two rival groups think she's some "chosen" leader. But no, she's not buying all that ancient-warrior crap. And she's definitely not developing a superhero alter ego like in those old comic books. For Chloe, being the One means she can have whatever she wants -- i.e., more goof-off time and fewer "cat people" conventions.

Then she finds her friend bleeding in an alley. All at once Chloe realizes that the years of bloodshed are not over. In fact, they never will be. The Mai and the Tenth Blade are going to persist in their dangerous rivalry. Unless Chloe accepts her destiny -- and takes control.

Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
In this third installment of the promising series (following The Fallen and The Stolen, reviewed in KLIATT in September 2004), Chloe King, a not-so-typical teen, becomes the "Chosen One" of a group of cat people called Mai. Chloe grudgingly accepts her role as the spiritual leader of the Pride and works to protect and defend her fellow Mai from the Order of the Tenth Blade, a clan of assassins bent on destroying them. At the same time as this age-old struggle wages on, Chloe must make a hard choice between her two boyfriends, Alyec and Brian. Alyec is a fellow Mai and the rest of their Pride are already hearing wedding bells for them. Brian is the human son of the leader of the Order of the Tenth Blade and, by all accounts, should be her mortal enemy. Things aren't just confusing for Chloe right now, either. Her best friends, Amy and Paul, are going through a difficult period in their relationship. Her new Mai confidant, Kim, is desperately trying to fit in with her human friends and, finally, Chloe's adoptive mom is still trying to wrap her brain around the fact that her daughter has claws and supernatural powers. Lots of action and angst in this one, folks! This isn't a stand-alone book and should be read in conjunction with the others. Fans of the series will definitely enjoy this volume, as it is the best yet. Readers will watch as the characters continue to develop, especially Chloe, who grows a lot as a person (and as a cat) this time around. Fans will eagerly await the next volume. This book is recommended for high school students due to mature language and content. (The Nine Lives of Chloe King, Vol. 3). KLIATT Codes: S—Recommended for senior high schoolstudents. 2004, Simon & Schuster, 245p., Ages 15 to 18.

    I LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh my gosh! this book was so so so so good!!!!! i first ran into these series in my school library when i had to check out a book, and after i read it, i had to check out the next, and after that, the next! so basically, this girl has cat instincts and abilities. and when her poeple, or race, finds her, they take her in. Chloe is adopted, and her father deserted her and her mom at a young age, and she and her mom, don't really get along very well. she has no idea who her real mom was, but it could take a huge toll on her own life.... anyway i highly recomend this book! i say its is better than the harry potter series by a teensy bit. so read read read read!!
