Overview

Chris Daughtry grew up in small towns in North Carolina and Virginia. As a teenager, he learned to play rock 'n' roll music and soon formed his own band. Despite his broad talent as a singer, Chris spent years performing in small nightclub, never able to catch the eye of a record producer. But then he auditioned for American Idol, and suddenly people began to take notice.

Chris soon emerged as the favorite to win the competition during the fifth season of Idol, but after reaching the final four he was stunned to learn he had been voted off. He soon singed a record deal, though, and his album, Daughtry, shot to the top of the charts where it remained for more than 100 weeks while selling some 4 million copies. Although he didn't win on American Idol, Chris's fans remain devoted as they watch his star continue to rise

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
When Chris Daughtry was eliminated from season five of American Idol, no one would have guessed that a show known for making pop and country stars was about to help launch the fastest selling rock album of all time. In this title of the "Dream Big: American Idol Superstars" series, Daughtry's success is chronicled, beginning with his upbringing in rural North Carolina and Virginia. He performed in high school musicals and formed rock bands with friends. At the urging of his wife, Daughtry reluctantly auditioned for the show's fifth season. Daughtry, the judges, and the show's audience were taken aback by his surprising fourth place departure, but Daughtry wasted no time getting right to work after leaving the show. His debut album came out six months after the season's end and went on to become the top-selling album of 2007. Daughtry continues to tour, do charity work, and raise his four children. The multihued book contains full-color pictures on nearly every page. Unfortunately, the information presented in the captions is simply repeating facts from the main text, often on the same page. Unnecessary and awkwardly placed sidebars offer information only loosely related to the main text, interrupting the flow of the chapter. Each title in this series includes an American Idol time line, myriad quotes from the artist, bold words later defined in a glossary, a chronology, further reading and websites to visit, as well as lists of albums, awards, and nominations. It is difficult to imagine a large audience for most of the books in this series, especially as many of the seasons premiered long before the intended audience would have been watching the show and many ofthe seasons' top contestants have now fallen into near obscurity.
