Overview

From best-selling author and design icon Chris Madden comes the first book on her design philosophy, and how to achieve her comfortable, chic style. Design expert Chris Madden has spent years chronicling other people’s beautiful rooms. Now, for the first time, she presents her own design sensibility as illustrated by examples such as her elegant one hundred-year-old carriage house in upstate New York and a mid-century modern family getaway in the mountains of Vermont. Organized by type of room, each house is explored—from entryways to bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, mudrooms, greenhouses, and terraces, as well as specialty rooms like yoga studios and a man’s study—through rich photography and dozens of practical styling tips. Readers learn how to layer fabrics and colors for seasonal decorating; how to repurpose materials; and how to recognize a room’s quality of light. Also featured are sidebars on caring for guests, collecting, and living in an old house versus a modern house. An avid gardener, Madden explores the way outdoor space frames and supports a house. This lush and elegant volume is an eminently practical resource of ideas for creating rooms in which to celebrate family, entertain friends, and provide personal sanctuary.

Not quite what I expected, yet still a beautiful book

Chris Madden has a wonderful sensibility when it comes to decorating and that comes through beautifully in this book. In her new book she takes you through her family's two homes; their main residence in New York State and their vacation home in Vermont. As such, you must understand/realize that all decorating ideas in this book are her very own; therefore the book is written in a manner as though she is speaking about her own house (because she is), rather than in a general manner as most decorating books. One of the things I didn't care for at first, but got used to, was the constant references to her self-designed furniture pieces pictured throughout her homes (that always seemed to work just perfectly in this spot or that). While they are beautiful and practical, most of us can't design our own furniture lines & have them crafted! But I had to realize she IS a decorator and furniture/fabric/home accessories designer after all. I guess it just seemed a little too ''me me me'' but I quickly got over it. Aside from that, this is a beautifully photographed book, and one where ideas and inspiration abound, such as (easily) turning an armoire into a mini breakfast bar-slash-kitchen for the master bedroom! I'm happy I was able to mark this off my wish list and add it to my bookshelf! Now, if she would only come back with another television series like she once had on HGTV... (hint hint Chris!!).
