Christa McAuliffe: Pioneer Space Teacher

Christa McAuliffe: Pioneer Space Teacher

by Charlene W. Billings

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-6 A concise, well-written account of the teacher who was to be the first civilian in space, her training along side the seasoned astronauts, the enthusiasm of her professional peers and hometown friends, and the tragic ending. This is not a ``birth to death'' account of McAuliffe's life but instead concentrates on her contribution as a ``pioneer space teacher.'' Much information is presented about the training process and the actual preparation for the Challenger flight. This book does not present information that is not already well known to those who have been subjected to the heavy media coverage throughout the Challenger schedule. While this slim book is attractively designed, the 19 black-and-white photographs can be found in other books. Overall, however, this biography is appropriate for intermediate students, and libraries should consider it. Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, Iowa
