Christianity for the Twenty-First Century: The Prophetic Writings of Alexander Men

Overview

Illustrating his life and work, this book examines three of Men's concerns: the intellectual problems confronting Christians today, including the knowledge of God, the problem of evil, and the pressure of scientific scepticism and the place of Christianity among other world faiths. it also reveals how Men shared particularly Russian worries on the future of religious expression in his country.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Roberts, a British writer of Russian affairs, and Shukman, a priest and teacher of Russian, have done Western Christians a great service by making available a translation of some of the writings about the contemporary Christian life and the Russian Christian experience of Russian Orthodox priest Men. Born in 1935, ordained in 1960, and murdered (no doubt for political motivations) in 1990, Men experienced various forms of religious oppression. His essay "Christianity: The Universal Vision" discusses how Christian truth builds on truths found in other religious traditions, while "Religion, the `Cult of Personality' and the Secular State" engages in intense analysis of Russian culture and what led to Christianity's collapse in that country. Men combines global and Russian perspectives, while providing perceptive insights into late 20th-century Christianity. Highly recommended not only for contemporary Christians but also for Russian politics collections.Carolyn M. Craft, Longwood Coll., Farmville, Va.
