Barnes & Noble - Martin Johnson
Christina Aguilera is an alumnus of the "New Mickey Mouse Club," the Orlando-based show that has spawned numerous young celebrities, including Britney Spears, J.C. and Justin of 'N Sync, and Keri Russell, star of WB's TV hit "Felicity." While comparisons to Spears and other teenyboppers are inevitable, Aguilera's music and approach have more in common with Russell's TV show: Sure, this is a record for kids, but it's made with grown-up artistic values. Aguilera has a rich, mature voice, and she sings as if the song is an end in itself, not just a mere component of a larger spectacle. Not surprisingly, Aguilera's touchstones are Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Her lower register borrows heavily from Carey's trick bag, and many of the tunes emulate the pleasant chirp of Houston's mid-'80s up-tempo hits. The two best-known songs -- the infectious, bouncy hit "Genie in a Bottle" and "Reflection," the gentle ballad from "Mulan" -- are typical of the offerings here, suggesting that CHRISTINA AGUILERA is just the introductory statement from a singer who'll have much more to say later in her career.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Since Christina Aguilera is the third and last of the New Mickey Mouse Club alumni to hit the charts in the mid-'90s -- following two members of 'N Sync and Britney Spears -- it's easy for cynical observers to assume that she was the lesser of the three talents since she arrived last after everyone scaled the charts. That's not the case at all. If anything, Aguilera is the best of the three, blessed with a rich voice that's given the material it deserves. Her eponymous debut remains firmly within the teen-oriented dance-pop genre, but unlike Spears' album, this is done right. The songwriting is strong -- the ballads are engaging, the dance numbers are catchy -- the production is clean and uncluttered, letting Aguilera's voice take the foreground. Most impressively, she not only has charisma, she can actually sing, bringing conviction to these love and heartbreak songs. So, Christina Aguilera may be lightweight, but it's lightweight in the best possible sense -- breezy, fun, engaging, and enjoyable on each repeated listen. Out of the deluge of teen-pop albums in 1999, this feels like the best of the lot.

    WHAT A VOICE

THIS YOUNG WOMAN HAS A VOICE TO DIE FOR. LOOK OUT BRITNEY SPEARS, MANDY MOORE AND JESSICA SIMPSON. CHRISTINA IS DEFINITELY THE ONE TO WATCH RIGHT NOW. SHE IS UP FOR TWO OR THREE GRAMMYS THIS YEAR AND SHE IS SO DESERVING OF THEM ALL. SHE HAS A FANTASTIC VOICE AND SHE SINGS FROM THE DEPTH OF HER SOUL. YOU CAN REALLY FEEL THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE SINGER AND THE MEANING OF THE SONG. KEEP IT UP GIRL!!!!!!

    impressed

i'm impressed. she has one amazing pair of lungs and a beautiful voice. It's refreshing to find someone who is beautiful and can actually sing. Britney spears may be beautiful but she hides her weak and unimpressive voice behind funky beats and music unlike Christina who doesnt need to.

Christina is the new DIVA of this millienium.

This spectular album was released in 1999 and i like most of the songs here. If you love such divas like Celine Dion,Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey you will love Christina Aguilera she has amazing voice. Her range is somewhere between 7-8 octave´s and she is better than Jessica Simpson who sounds more like Mariah Carey,Christina sounds just as miss Whitney Houston and Celine and not many female singers can hit their big notes but Christina can. Tracklist. 1.Genie In A Bottle a popsong and number#1 hit but not my favorit. 2.What A Girl Wants another pop hit. 3.I Turn To You the second number#1 single from this album a powerballad penned by Diane Warren and produced by Celine´s &Cher´s longtime producer Guy Roche.I Love this song it is the best song on the album. 4.So Emotional a pop song with bubblegummy sound not my fave. 5.Come On Over another hit single and i like it much. 6.Reflection from The Walt Disney Classic Mulan this song is wonderful and Christina hits her big note here and sounds just like Whitney Houston. 7.Love For All Seasons one of my favorit songs on the album. 8.Somebody´s Somebody anoter Diane Warren song. 9.When You Put Your Hands On Me the only boring song on this album. 10.Love Will Find Away a bubblegummpopsong not my fave. 11.Obvious a beautiful song and one of the best songs i´ve heard with Christina. This album is better than Britney Spears debut Baby One More Time.

    #1 best fanatic of Christina

With Christina she is not fake she's diffrent and talented in her on way, unlike Britney Spears. She isn't going to change her personality just to be famous she likes her self the way she is.

    Absolutely Astonishing

I've heard of her but grew up with Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. So I thought who cares, she can't compare. And I am right. She can compete. She is the two of them rolled in one but with a refreshed inner soul that reaches, especially in ''Somebody's Somebody'' Damn I wish I was 21 again instead of 31. Real talent-no, God's gift YES. A definte must own

A great singer that does math the likes of Mariah and Whitney

The first time I heard this young diva's self-titled debut, I was in love. It was unfortunate that her fist single, ''genie in a bottle'' did not showcase all of her talent, but no one should be decieved by the catchy single. Just listen to ''reflection'' from the mulan soundtrak (track #6 on the christina's album) and you will hear a young Whitney Houston in the making. Yes, at certain points she belts only one note (as in I turn to you), making it seem like she is unable to hold it. However, if one listens to Mariah Carey, one will find she does this same technique similarly (sometimes even shorter). Listen again to ''reflection'' and one will notice that she can hold the note true, as does Whitney Houston and even Celine Dion. She truly can be compared to Mariah, as they both have similar vocal styles, although I do think Christina is better becuase she is not as ''breathy'' in her music. Her voice may not be as mature as Whitney Houstons, but is well on its way. Whitney has said that Christina did the best rendition of ''run to'' -besides herself. WOW! Christina will be lasting through the years, as one can surely tell with the latin release of ''mi reflejo'' and the new album this fall. She cannot be compared to any pop singer of today, although Jessica simpson wants to do a duet with her (but her voice is very imature, although she can sing). Britney will go down history with sex appeal, and Christina will go down with the powerful voice. What an honor.

    What a Voice!

Christina Aguilera is probably the best out of the ''Teen Pop Princesses''. I love her self-titled debut. It's just amazing. All of the songs are well-written and well-performened. I love every single song except for the last track, track #12, which I don't really like but that's OK because this album is still excellent. Definitely a must have for Pop music lovers!

    Awesome ''Little'' C.D.

I am an ''old lady'' who really appreciates the beautiful music this beautiful young lady puts out. She is melodic, has good vocal quality, has a blessed range of awesome octaves. I hope she will keep her head on straight in spite of all the tinsel of tinseltown so that she may mature into a diva of songs and last for her lifetime. God Bless!!
