Overview

Leander, Lord Charrington has a problem. Raised to be a charming diplomat, women fall in love with him.

He, however, seeks a marriage of convenience with a sensible woman with whom he can live on honest terms.

The impoverished widow, Judith Rossiter, Angel Bride of poet Sebastian Rossiter, seems ideal. Still dressing in black, she remains devoted to her dead husband, and she has children to provide for.

Judith Rossiter thanks heaven for the earl's offered escape from disaster. Though her story is not what the earl believes, the terms of his agreement—to not fall in love with him—seem simple enough. Or so she believes on her wedding day....

This was one of the best romances I have read in a long time! Leander Knollis, wants a wife and a home for Christmas, but doesn't want to marry any of the many ladies who insist on falling in love with him. He had seen too many one way relationships to want one for himself. Then he finds the Weeping Widow, a woman so in love with her former husband that she could never love again. Judith Rossiter was in trouble. Her widow's pension was fast running out, and Leander's proposal was a life saver. The option of being debt-free as well as getting a father for her 2 children was to good an offer to refuse. But when someone tries to kill her eldest boy, Leander and Judith must solve the mystery, and discover the mystery of love before Christmas.

HE HAD NO INTEREST IN LOVE Leander Knollis, Earl of Charrington, was tired of gadding about the Continent on diplomatic missions. It was time he settled down in his family home with a wife at his side and enjoyed a proper English Christmas. But his search for an intelligent woman without fanciful notions of romance was a frustrating one indeed... until he met the very sensible Judith Rossiter. Her figure was most attractive, her manner most pleasing, and her heart kind and gentle. All he wanted was a marriage of convenience, but soon he began to wonder whether his eminently practical mind would be overruled by his surprisingly foolish heart. LOVE WAS ALL SHE COULD OFFER It was an odd sort of marriage proposal which left Judith preplexed. Why would an earl, and a most attractive one at that, have any interest in marrying an impoverished widow with two children? It was a peculiar notion to consider but the opportunity to better her family's fortune, particularly in the advent of the approaching holiday season prompted her to accept his offer. It seemed an ideal arrangement in which she had nothing to fear... unless it was losing her heart to this most enigmatic earl!

Reviewed by Karen Pirnot for Readers' Favorite Jo Beverley has given us another wonderful historical romance in Christmas Angel. Lord Leander Knollis is one of a company of rogues who wants to settle down in the family mansion. He is ready for a wife and children, with one stipulation: he does not want love to factor into the relationship. He is introduced to the widow Judith Rossiter who had an unsatisfactory marriage to a poet. At first, the characters appear a bit shallow, but then we really get into the heart of their true personalities and the plot takes off like an arrow leaving the bow. Judith's two children factor heavily into her decision to marry Lord Knollis and Judith's practicality is equally attractive to him. They begin to develop plans for a life together which involves living in the mansion estate Lord Knollis has rejected for years.  No one knows how to tell a historical romance story like Jo Beverly and she does it with ease and finesse in Christmas Angel. The plot keeps moving at a sometimes predictable pace and then the reader is swept up into the unexpected, which facilitates the growth of the characters and delights the reader. Judith presents as a strong woman at a time in which women were still considered possessions of the husband. Lord Knollis shows himself to be a compassionate and understanding man who welcomes input from all intelligent beings. The romance builds to a wonderful resolve and surely most readers will be cheering for the union and the "happily ever after" as well.

I liked this book so much! It grabbed me right from the start and I loved seeing more of Beth and Lucien at the beginning and then finishing off with Nicholas and Eleanor. Excellent. I love Leander and Judith. Even though Judith has more doubt than I wanted her to have, it's not unbelievable. She has no reason to trust Leander, but she really wants to make a go of it and I find that very enjoyable. This is the third book in the Rogues series and well worth picking up used since it doesn't seem to be available new.
