Overview

From the author of The Man Who Loved Jane Austen and The Maidenstone Lighthouse comes a heartwarming, unforgettable novel set on the ruggedly beautiful island of Cape Fear in the Carolinas, where a man determined to retreat from the world discovers the redemptive power of unexpected love.

With its rough gray shingles and weathered slate roof, Sea Pines cottage seems, at first glance, past its prime. But inside this remote fisherman's house, a driftwood fire crackles in the fireplace, brightly colored rugs cover the floor, and cozy cushions dot the worn, welcoming furniture. A young man named Robert has retreated after the war, planning to spend his days writing, tending to the local lighthouse, and nursing his injuries-physical and mental. For company, he adopts a young Golden Retriever puppy named Meteor, who happily settles into life at Sea Pines, delighting in his master's loving care.

Robert and Meteor spend months in quiet companionship, until the day Robert rescues a young woman from a storm at sea. Strong-willed and intelligent, Laura sees past Robert's injuries to the proud, passionate man beneath, and-with some matchmaking help from Meteor-they begin a new life together at the cottage. When their son, Nicholas, is born on Christmas Eve, Meteor immediately becomes the little boy's most loyal friend. But even Meteor's tireless devotion can't protect his cherished family from all of life's unexpected challenges-hurdles that will teach each of them lessons of courage, faith, friendship, and the enduring love that can sustain us through life's coldest seasons.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

A dog named Meteor narrates O'Rourke's inert Christmas clunker. Meteor's owner, Robert, is a war veteran with a missing leg and a wounded soul that's patched up after Robert and Meteor rescue a woman, Laura, from drowning, and Robert and Laura get married. They have a son, Nicholas, and everything's ducky until an illness threatens to claim Laura. They fight through it as a family and learn that faith and perseverance can help them accomplish anything. Dogs have triumphed as narrators this year, but Meteor is the runt of the litter; his language is only surpassed in stiltedness by the humans' dialogue, and it doesn't help the pup's case that the narrative is preachy and bland. Excellent Book

I usually don't read romance novels. My favorite type of book is a good horror one, but the cover drew me to this book. I know you're not suppose to "judge a book by its cover", but that's exactly what I did with this one, and I am so glad I did. This was a very touching and inspiring story. As I read it, it sent me far away to a fantasy land that we all dream of going to one day. The ending surprised me, and when I finished it, I felt all good inside. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who would like to "get away" from the hussle and bussle of life for an hour or two.

    a tender warm holiday romance

Wannabe writer Robert needs to escape from everyone so he accepts work as lighthouse keeper at Cape Fear. The job is suited to the solitary life he desires that he prays enables him to escape his nightmares and start writing. He selects Meteor, a puppy from Sam¿s kennel Sam is pleased to rid himself of the canine who shows no inclination towards hunting. ------------- The duo becomes companions and best friends. When Robert rescues Laura, she is grateful, but also determined to help him overcome his emotional issues. He wants her to leave while Meteor the matchmaker knows she is perfect for both of them.------------- CHRISTMAS AT SEA PINES COTTAGE is a tender warm holiday romance with the uniqueness being Meteor tells the tale from his viewpoint totally stealing the novel from his human pets. Though the plot might seem thin and is relatively short, this fits appropriately as the book is a simple love story, complicated by the two humans. Character driven by the fully developed trio, fans will relish this inspiring tale of love (to include Meteor) the late Mike O'Rourke will be proud of this story.---------- Harriet Klausner
