Christmas Carp

Christmas Carp

by Tornqvist, Marit Tornqvist (Illustrator), Greta Kilburn (Translator)

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Spending the holiday in Prague with his recently widowed grandfather, Thomas buys the Christmas carp at the market while Grandpa purchases the tree. Thomas rescues the fish from a gutting, names it Peppo, and puts it in the bathtub. While Grandpa cooks, Thomas plays with his fish and later makes carp-shaped cookies. When the two open their gifts on Christmas Eve, Thomas opens one from the perceptive old man to Peppo, a card saying ``You can make a wish.'' After careful consideration, Thomas and his grandfather set Peppo free. Beautifully detailed watercolors show wintry Prague in pastel Christmas finery, and alert readers will notice how Christmas may be celebrated in Czechoslovakia. In the manner of Beth Peck's illustrations for Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory (Knopf, 1989), Tornqvist has gently illuminated a quiet story with character, warmth, and depth. The translation, however, is somewhat stiff and formal.
