All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
In 1998, A&M released the original Carpenters' albums for the first time on CD. Along with the reissues, the label released Christmas Collection, a double-disc that combines Christmas Portrait and An Old Fashioned Christmas on one set. Neither album offers any surprises -- they sound exactly like you'd imagine a Carpenters Christmas album would sound like. Since the two albums are virtually interchangeable, relying on Richard's famously light, inoffensive arrangements and Karen's sweet, soaring vocals, they make for a terrific pairing. Classic Christmas

It does not get any better than Karen Carpenter doing Ave Maria. This is a long time staple in my home and I listen to it the second the Christmas season comes, all the way through to New Year's Eve. Her velvety smooth voice is remarkable and washes over you like a cup of hot chocolate. Karen is arguably the greatest alto in recorded popular music. The songs on this collection are all classic Christmas tunes, religious and secular. They are all done in a refined, timeless fashion. I continue to highly recommend this outstanding collection. My favorite songs on this cd include: "Merry Christmas, Darling," a fantastic original Christmas tune, that has since become a classic. It brings tears to my eyes when I think of all the family and friends I wish I could be with during the holidays. I also adore "Ave Maria," there has never been a voice like Karen's to carry out the strong, beautiful, and yet quiet words of powerful prayer.

    THE ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS COLLECTION!

I have loved the Carpenters Christmas Collection for years. In the days of cassette tapes, I must have had to purchase it three times over because I wore the tapes out from playing them so much. I'm now ordering my second CD set because mine got scratched. I especially love the Christmas Portrait CD. The arrangement of the music just flows seamlessly from one song to the next. The instrumentals are beautiful, and of course Karen's voice is incomparable - not to mention suitable for singing along with, a must in my book. I enjoy many other Christmas albums, but I always come back to this one. My three children all have their own copy so when they move away from home they'll still be able to enjoy the Christmas music they heard every year at home. Well actually, I play it all year round! You won't be sorry if you purchase this CD set.

    Amazing Grace! Karen Lives!

If you love the sound of Karen Carpenter's voice, this is one collection you cannot afford to miss. Her readings of old standards like "I'll Be Home For Christmas", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" are some of the best recorded. No one else could produce that warm, and yet plaintave, vocal quality as well as she did. Just about all your Christmas favorites are featured on these two discs. Richard's instrumental rendition of "My Favorite Things" is very nice. The two album's this collection represents are the ones that made Christmas albums fashionable again. This is a wonderful mixture of the sacred and the secular and well worth owning.
