Author of nearly a hundred books for children and adults, and winner of both the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes, Pearl S. A boy surprises his father on Christmas morning by getting up early and milking the cows on their farm.

Editorial Reviews

Booklist
Abeautiful message, powerfully delivered.
New York Times Book Review
This gem of a Christmas tale…gleams in its picture book debut.
Publishers Weekly
Published in 1955 and appearing for the first time as a picture book, this modest holiday tale from the author of The Good Earth might well have been called The Good Son. On Christmas Eve, a man recalls the holiday many years ago when he gave his father, a struggling farmer, a most-appreciated gift: the boy rose extra early to do his father's biggest chore, the milking. Buck's understated yet moving piece, paired with a sentimental note from the illustrator, will resonate with readers. Buehner's (Snowmen at Night) inky, starlit winter skies and rustic barn revealed by lantern light transport readers to a hushed and humble setting. All ages. (Oct.) School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Originally published in 1955, this story has been illustrated and brought to life for a new generation. A man remembers a great discovery he made when he was 15 and living on his father's farm. A few days before Christmas he overhears his dad saying how much he hates having to wake his son at dawn for morning chores. As a special gift for his father, the boy gets up at a quarter to three on Christmas morning and does the milking by himself. Buehner illustrates these scenes, many taking place at night and illuminated by lanterns or by moonlight, with a sturdy, folksy, old-fashioned solidity. The hard life on a farm, the struggle to keep the family and animals warm and fed, is reflected on the parents' faces. Moving and tender, this is a fine choice for reading aloud or family sharing.-S. Kirkus Reviews
This longer story by Nobel Laureate Buck, originally published in 1955, is presented for the first time as an illustrated work for children. Early one Christmas, an older man thinks back to his best Christmas morning in the year that he was 15 and living on his family dairy farm. That year, the narrator of the story, Rob, surprised his father with a special, heart-felt gift by getting up in the middle of the night to do all the milking by himself so his father could have Christmas morning off. The boy’s joy in planning the surprise for his father and the touching appreciation, pride, and love in the father’s gratitude are effectively conveyed in both the moving text and in Buehner’s (Snowmen at Night, p. 1385, etc.) realistic paintings. His deep-toned, striking illustrations are mainly set at night, with snowy farm scenes lit only by glowing lantern and shining star. One spread shows the Nativity scene with puffy clouds in a turquoise evening sky shaped like angel heralds, and the following memorable spread of the barn at night repeats this element with subtle clouds in the shapes of the participants in the manger setting. Buck’s sentimental but touching story memorably illustrates the value of a gift created with love, a gift like Buehner’s. (illustrator’s note) (Picture book. 6-9)

    Moving Christmas Story

Great family Christmas read. Touching and a warm reminder of how doing something nice for others is the best Christmas gift of all. We received this as a gift and we love it. This is a great gift to give to children and families of all ages. The illustrations are as beautiful as the story is touching.

    A timeless, ageless story

'Christmas Day in the Morning' may be classified as a children's book, but it is a story of love and giving that is timeless and for all ages. It is sentimental, but not maudlin; easy-to-read, but not simple-minded. If there was only one Christmas book I could buy, this would be it. It has become my 'new' classic and I have recommended it to many friends, including a book club. The illustrations are on par with Buck's words (and you must read the illustrator's forward... almost as moving as the story).

    Disappointing!

Our family very much enjoys reading inspiring Christmas stories (throughout the year...) and had heard about this story as a 'must have read' for the holidays. We were terribly disappointed. The storyline was flat and rather uninspiring. Many in the Max Lucado series appeal to us, as well as 'The Polar Express,' 'Santa's Favorite Story,' 'Joshua the Crippled Lamb,' and many, many others. However, this simply did not 'speak to us' in the same way that other books have touched us. Our family was quite disappointed.
