Overview

No household should be without a Nat King Cole album in its library. If yours is lacking a recording by one of the planet's greatest vocal stylists ever (he was also one of its most accomplished swing pianists), Christmas for Kids is the ideal starter. To listen to this compilation of Cole's kid-friendliest holiday songs, along with a couple of nonseasonal lullabies, is to bathe luxuriously in his silken tenor. Featuring songs recorded between 1946 and 1960, this collection contains many of the same songs that appeared on 1995's Christmas Is for Kids, plus three additional tracks. The particular delight of this collection lies in hearing not only the long-departed Cole's signature holiday tunes, such as "The Christmas Song" (a.k.a. "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire") and "Silent Night," but also some chestnuts no longer familiar to today's audience. These include "The Little Christmas Tree," "Mrs. Santa," and the lovely "Take Me Back to Toyland." Most touching of all is a thoughtful but not maudlin account of a poverty-stricken child at Christmas, "The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot," which could make even the greediest grinch open his heart. As an added bonus, the album's packaging includes a sweet holiday story written by Cole's daughter Carole.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jason Ankeny
Christmas for Kids compiles Nat King Cole's most light-hearted holiday material, including performances of "All I Want for Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)," "Frosty the Snowman" and "Take Me Back to Toyland." (Of course, it also includes his perennial recording of "The Christmas Song.") For younger listeners, it's a fine introduction to Cole's enduring greatness.

I absolutely love this cd!!. Evoking cherished memories of holiday seasons gone by - the brightness of a sun drenched field blanketed in snow, the warmth of a blazing fire in the hearth, the smell of cinnamon apple pie baking in the oven, the laughter and good wishes, the sparkling, wonder-filled eyes of children awaiting Santa- Nat King Cole¿s renditions of the many classics on this album thoroughly embody the spirit of Christmas. In addition, the fact that a portion of the proceeds benefits the Children's Defense Fund, a wonderful non-profit organization dedicated to advocating the rights of children across the country, makes it even better. An instant classic!

This is bar-none the most wonderful Christmas ''album'' ever! I listened to it as a child with my mother and now it is MY children's favorite Christmas music. We own at least 2 or 3 copies because we want it for the car, the home stereo and one just in case we lose one of the others!
