Children's LiteratureThe excitement of Christmas eve, the delight of opening gifts and the joy of seeing friends and family members are expressed in simple poetic lines. Emery's illustrations work hand-in-hand with the text to create scenes to which a child can relate. The children in the story peek out the window on a moonlit, snow-covered scene. Santa lifts packages out of his sack. The next morning, one of the sisters and the baby brother place the Christ child in the manger. This family of five bakes and decorates cookies together as the text reads, "Everywhere,/ gifts to share./ Each reflecting/ God's own care." Emery is more successful with scenery than faces but young children are apt to overlook that. The text reflects a religious Christmas theme, but includes many symbols of the holiday. One of the few Christmas books with a text short enough for very young children. 2004, Boyds Mills Press, Ages 2 to 4.
