Overview

Judith Graber has always been the obedient daughter. When her older brother Josh struggled with his love life, she offered wise counsel. When her younger brother Caleb flirted with the idea of leaving their order, she firmly told him he was wrong. Over the years, she’s watched her younger siblings, helped around the house, and worked in her family’s store during her spare time. Judith feels overworked, overlooked, and underappreciated this holiday season.

But everything changes when her father hires Ben Knox.

Ben Knox is the “bad boy” of Sugarcreek. Though he’s never considered jumping the fence, he’s certainly never tried to be anything close to dutiful. Two years ago he left Sugarcreek under a cloud of shame. Rumors circulated that his rumspringa had been filled with more than the usual harmless explorations.

Now he’s back and working side by side with Judith.

As the chaos of the holiday season threatens to sap all joy, sparks fly between Ben and Judith. But Judith steels herself to ignore her infatuation. The last thing she wants to be is just one more girl who falls under Ben’s spell. Ben, on the other hand, wants Judith to realize there’s more to him than his bad reputation. When he fled Sugarcreek, he was running from a disruptive home life. Now that he’s back, he wants a fresh beginning.

Could this Christmas season bring love and a new life for the unlikeliest pair in Sugarcreek?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Goody-two-shoes Judith Graber has always helped out in her parents’ store, gotten good grades in school, and pitched in at home, but has never felt like anyone was looking out for her. When hometown bad boy Benjamin Knox comes back and starts working at the store, he treats Judith with the caring and consideration she craves. An Amish community backdrop adds homespun sweetness, with a focus on simplicity and family that’s never heavy-handed. Fans of Gray’s Seasons of Sugarcreek novels will especially appreciate the cameos by familiar characters, but new readers will have no trouble starting the series here. (Nov.)
USA Today
"A sweet, straightforward story about how love can be tested by family, faith, and personal insecurity. Enjoyable and heartwarming."
The Deseret News
"A story of love and forgiveness, Gray paints a stirring picture of Christmas time and the magic it can have on people."
Library Journal
Love is in the air in Gray's fourth series entry (after Autumn's Promise). Dutiful shopkeeper's daughter Judith Graber didn't think that bad boy Ben Knox even knew who she was. Working together in her father's Amish store during the holiday rush, they learn that they've each admired special qualities in the other since they were schoolmates. Judith's big family and other Sugarcreek residents are lovingly portrayed in this feel-good winner.

It was a cute, easy read, happy ending book. About two people who resist the nature of attraction and try to prove themselves by staying true to their initial childhood opinions of each other. Yet they have people who love them so much as to help them see the truth of their present situation and compatibility. Life is amazing and it just shows that sometimes we do need others to help us figure out the mystery :D

Sweet, Simple and a Great Read

I’ve been sort of in a “reading rut” of late; just tend to reach for my phone or the computer to play a game or surf the web rather than picking up a book. But there are sooo many books I want to read that I’ve wanted to break out of this. This week, I think I may have found the book to do it…I read about 75% of this book in one sitting.
Christmas in Sugarcreek, by Shelley Shepard Gray, was just a quick, sweet read. I tend to only pick this type of book up around Christmas time but I’m thinking that perhaps I should do it more often…give myself a little more variety. I really enjoyed spending time with the residents of Sugarcreek and, yes, I am going to miss them. The simple lifestyle of the Amish and Mennonite characters in the book had me yearning for more simplicity in my own life. The best part is that I know it is there if I just make time to find it.

Come spend the Christmas season with the characters of Sugarcreek!

Returning to the setting of the Seasons of Sugarcreek books and being able to catch up with all the characters we have come to love and adore, is where Christmas in Sugarcreek by Shelly Shepard Gray begins. When she finished writing Autumn's Promise, Shelly felt the need to tell Judith Graber's story since she felt it was a character she neglected. Judith needed a man who would love her enough to make her smile and that is what she finds in Ben Knox.

Ben Knox has the reputation of being the bad Amish boy, one who spent his rumspringa finding and capturing the hearts of girls and leaving them behind battered and broken. Even though Judith has always liked him, she isn't about to let her feelings get in the way of common sense. Yet that is all Judith's life has been about, being the girl who is reliable, dependable, one with a great head on her shoulders and very smart. She's the one her parents rely on to help with the household chores, the children and running the family store. Just for once, Judith dreams of doing something just for herself or finding just the right person who will take care of her.

Just when Judith doesn't think things can get any worse, they do. When her brother Caleb is called away from helping Judith with the store to care for her wife who is pregnant with twins, she feels overwhelmed. Her father offers to hire someone to help her out and Ben Knox is just the right person for the job. Will Judith be able to keep her heart and feelings locked deep inside or will Ben be the key to unlock the love she has kept inside? Could this Christmas season bring love and a new life for the unlikeliest pair in Sugarcreek?

I received Christmas in Sugarcreek compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and after falling in love with the characters from Sugarcreek in Shelly's series, I couldn't wait to share Christmas with the Graber family once again. A wonderful story of finding a bit of light and hope inside each of us, if we are but brave enough to seek it. Another award winning book that rates a perfect 5 out of 5 stars!

    Highly Recommended!!

Christmas in Sugarcreek is sure to please Shelley Shepard Gray fans near and far. What a wonderfully written book. She writes each character with such ease that I don't think one would have to have read her series Seasons of Sugarcreek to follow this book. This book follows Judith Graber, self-described goody-two shoes on her journey to find love and to carve out her own identity among her large family. She feels like she is overworked and taken a little advantage of because she is still single and basically she feels obligated. She desperately wants a husband and a life of her own. The tides begin to turn when "Bad Boy" Ben Knox returns and her world turns upside down with mixed emotions of how she feels for him. Meanwhile, Lilly and Robert Miller are adjusting to being newlyweds and becoming Mennonites. There's little twist of the story "The Gift of the Magi" involving them. Fans will love to hear more of their love story. Caleb Grabers story also gets told. He is in love with Rebecca Yoder, who he thinks is keeping something from him. He doesn't want to give too much of his heart away only to have Rebecca not feel the same. This book is such a touching story about love, acceptance and having the faith to follow ones heart. Readers will not be disappointed. I recommend this book to all.
