Barnes & Noble - Steve Klinge
For Joan Osborne, Christmas is a bluesy, soulful affair, uplifting but tinged with melancholy. And it makes for stirring music. Christmas Means Love follows in the tradition of How Sweet It Is, Osborne's album of soul covers: Backed by a rootsy blues band and, on some songs, a female chorus, she sings her heart out. Or maybe she's just singing with her heart out, with direct emotion. Osborne's no show-off: She avoids superfluous pyrotechnics in favor of deep-pocket soul grooves that let these songs and carols simmer and smolder. On the airy "Christmas in New Orleans," Osborne is lighthearted and intimate, backed by acoustic guitars and a jazzy harmonica. On "Cherry Tree Carol" and "Children Go Where I Send Thee," she slips into gospel mode, the former song accented with slide guitar and organ, the latter with a slinky, swampy electric groove that nods to the Staple Singers. One minute, she's playing it straight and somber on the beautifully spare "Angels We Have Heard On High"; the next, she's sassy and sexy on the country blues of "What Do Bad Girls Get?" A mix of the secular "Santa Claus Baby" and the sacred "Away in a Manger", Osborne's Christmas Means Love takes a wonderfully earthy approach to heavenly music.

Christmas Means Love [Barnes & Noble Exclusive]

Oh, man - this CD is just what I was hoping for and more! The traditional songs everyone already knows sound fresh and alive but the ones you've not heard a million times already are the real highlights here - from the gorgeous title track to the terrific retro harmonies of "Santa Claus Baby" to the sweeping majestic sounds of "Christmas Must Be Tonight" to the delightfully jazzy "Christmas in New Orleans" to the funky rendition of "Children Go Where I Send Thee" to the playful sexy blues of "What Do Bad Girls Get?" to the powerful driving force of "Great Day In December" - there's not a bad track on it! I'm just blown away by how cohesive and satsifying it is, both as a Joan project and as a Xmas CD. In fact, I think "Great Day In December" is one of the best songs she's ever recorded - period! I can only hope that CHRISTMAS MEANS LOVE is promoted well and that people get a chance to hear it - it's way too good to go unnoticed...

    Joan's Back!

This album is so deeply moving to me. It's Joan at her finest, singing in her signature soulful style. It isn't just for Christmas. Great song choice...Christmas Must Be Tonight by the Band and Christmas in New Orleans really stand out. She is truly a living legend.
