Anne Mortimer's brightly colored and detailed paintings are full of festive energy, and the rhyming verse makes this a great read-aloud alternative to The Night Before Christmas.

There's much to do before Christmas comes! The tree needs decorating, lights need hanging, and carols must be sung. There are presents to leave for animal friends, treats to nibble on, and stockings to hang by the fire.

When everything is ready, Mouse makes a Christmas wish before snuggling down to sleep. Will Mouse's wish come true?

This cozy story for young readers celebrates the little things we do that make Christmas a magical time for all.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
The small book size (approximately 7 ½ inches by 8 ½ inches) is simply perfect for this warm and cozy story. Each turn-of-the-page presents four lines of rhyming text that describe Mouse’s Christmas preparations. There are decorations to be hung, special treats to eat, and carols to be sung. Giving presents (one for the cat), and sharing with those in need (some gingerbread for a robin out in the snow) inform the reader that there is more to Christmas than simply getting presents. Of course Santa is seen arriving in his sleigh. He leaves a very special gift for Mouse. The reader is invited into the book by Mouse who is pictured on the title page in the middle of a brightly colored paper chain wearing a “Christmas Cracker” crown. This little mouse has personality plus, often looking out at the reader. Each page offers clear and simple watercolor illustrations with plenty of white space to allow the reader to focus on the delightful details. There is the gift tag on the present that Mouse leaves for the sleeping cat, Mouse’s favorite treats, and Mouse snuggling down after hanging up the stocking. The joy-filled text, extended by the whimsy of the traditional-style illustrations, is a treat for parents and children to share. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo AGERANGE: Ages 2 to 6.

PreS-K—Detailed watercolor illustrations and a brief rhyming text introduce youngsters to the cozy home in which adorable Mouse is making preparations for Christmas. The human inhabitants are never seen, but this is clearly a residence that any mouse would enjoy. The large, sleeping cat is decribed as his "special friend," and there are plenty of holiday treats on display. The last illustration shows Mouse wearing his paper crown and resting against a Stilton cheese as he makes his own holiday wish: "Merry Christmas, Everyone!" This gentle, secular story is suitable for sharing with young children.—Virginia Walter, UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies

A little mouse perched on a pecan tart and staring out at the reader forms the intriguing cover illustration for this rhyming exploration of a mouse-sized Christmas celebration. The protagonist mouse wears a tiny red and green crown as he hangs lights and holly, arranges ornaments on the tree and places presents underneath. He helps himself to treats from the Christmas Eve dessert buffet, sings carols with mouse friends by the fire and finally falls asleep in a Christmas stocking awaiting Santa's arrival. Santa grants the mouse's Christmas wish (left out for Santa in a tiny red envelope) with a huge wheel of blue cheese all his own. Mortimer's detailed, polished watercolors are captivating, with tiny surprises, such as the reflection of Santa in a shiny ornament or a gift tag with cat and mouse paw prints to identify recipient and giver. The brief, rhyming text is a touch singsong-y and perhaps a bit too earnest, with a rather limp conclusion of "MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE!" However, the short rhymes are also simple enough for very young children to understand. No new territory here, but a very cute mouse having a very merry Christmas all the same. (Picture book. 2-5)
