Overview

With her clear and sparkling soprano, Emma Kirkby has long been one of the most prized singers of the baroque repertory. This collection of Christmas Music by Alessandro Scarlatti, Philipp Friedrich Böddecker, and J. S. Bach brings the angelic qualities of her voice to the fore. For baroque composers, music for Christmas often returned to a pastoral style, evocative of the shepherds to whom Jesus' birth was announced. Kirkby sings two Scarlatti cantatas -- Non sò qual più m'ingombra and O di Betlemme -- that brim with joyous melody, each ending with a peaceful Aria Pastorale. Böddecker's brief Natus est Jesus opens the program on a reverent note, also incorporating verses of the carol "Joseph lieber, Joseph mein." Two arias from Bach cantatas find Kirkby in equally radiant voice, and the excellent musicians of London Baroque are heard on their own in Corelli's "Christmas" Concerto and other perennial baroque favorites by Pachelbel and Bach. These are, perhaps, overly familiar, but in the vocal portion of the program Kirkby has created a thoroughly lovely holiday gift, delving far beyond the usual chestnuts to discover some true gems.
