Overview

At the J-Bar Nothing Ranch on Christmas Eve, Patricia, Jason and their mother are waiting alone for their father to return from his drive. With an approaching Blizzard, they decide to go ahead and find a tree themselves, a scraggly mesquite branch that is not nearly as pretty as the cedar tree their father usually brings them.

Patricia and Jason are snug in their beds after finishing their chores early, when Patricia hears the corral gate banging in the wind. Not wanting her mother to find out she didn't do her chores right, she sneaks outside with Jason into the dangerous storm. They close the gate, but the wind and ice keeps them from making back to the house, so they prepare to spend the night in the barn.

Worried about their father, who is still out in the cold, they make their beds on loose hay in a horse stall, not expecting the special surprise that will make this a wonderful Christmas after all.

James Rice is widely acclaimed as the South's leading author and illustrator of juvenille books. With more than 1,000,000 copies of his books in print, he ranks among the nation's top authors and illustrators.

A brother and sister become stranded in the barn on their cattle ranch during a Christmas Eve blizzard.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
A blizzard is starting and Papa isn't home yet. Mama and the kids go out to cut down a Christmas tree, but end up with a scraggly branch of mesquite. After finishing their chores, Patricia and Jason go to bed, but they wake up when the corral gate starts banging. Patricia is worried that the stock will escape, so she and Jason head for the barn. Once there, however, the ice and wind keep them from getting back to the house. They bed down in the barn only to be awakened when Papa returns and they all return to celebrate Christmas inside the snug house. The pictures don't really match the story; for example, ice and snow are seen from a window, but when the children are outside, it is not apparent. Also the size and age of the kids seems inconsistent throughout the story.
