Overview

BOOM biddy BOOM biddy BOOM BOOM BOOM! What's that noise filling the room?" From this rousing beginning unfolds Christmas Parade, a World Premiere book from Sandra Boynton, created by her specifically as an eBook-with-audio experience. Christmas Parade is written, illustrated, narrated and-with her long-time songwriting partner, Michael Ford-orchestrated by the perennially beloved children's author. She also does the singing for the duck. Honest.

As the dynamic parade of 46 spiffy and intent animal musicians marches by, little listeners see and hear each instrument in turn: chickens with bassoons, ducks with trombones, mice with piccolos, cow saxophonists, a tiny bird with a large tuba, a glockenspiel pig, even a trumpet-playing Santa rhino-all underscored by marching snares (fifteen hippos, one cat) and one booming bass drum (an intrepid elephant.) Written with the irresistible rhythm of a lively marching band, scored with perfect parade moments of favorite old Christmas carols, and illustrated by the author with those improbable Boynton characters, Christmas Parade is a superb Christmas present for young children and families everywhere. Biddy BOOM.

In this NOOK Kids Read to Me book, children can choose to hear the story read aloud and pinch & stretch to zoom in on pictures.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The pigs, chickens, cows, rhinos, and other animals familiar to Boynton’s many fans join forces to celebrate Christmas—loudly. “First comes the elephant marching along/ with a boom-biddy boom-biddy steady and strong,” writes the author as a serious-looking pachyderm in a green marching band uniform leads the charge. It’s followed by “chickens with silver bassoons,” holly-tossing reindeer, a rhinoceros Santa, and more. Boynton’s sense of humor is less evident in this offering than in many of her other titles, but the book’s enthusiastic verse and crisp artwork are as in step as her corps of hippos on drums. Ages 3–6. (Oct.)

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Boynton presents a wild and woolly parade of creatures, all performing for a bunny-slipper-shod piggy. All the usual suspects are there: chickens with bassoons, piggies with balloons, a plethora of drumming hippos, Santa (as portrayed by a trumpet-wielding rhino), and much, much more. They march to a lively beat, straight to the little piggy's house to wish him Merry Christmas. Hand out the musical instruments, line up the kids, and get ready for a noisy holiday celebration! A fabulously fun addition.—Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library
Kirkus Reviews
Boynton's droll animal characters march through this small volume with their usual deadpan humor, set off by her minimalist rhyming text. A little pig watches the parade out his window, starting with a fierce-looking elephant drum major. There are chickens with bassoons, pigs with balloons, hippos with drums, and on and on, down to a tiny bird with a huge sousaphone. When the parade is over, the narrator pig is surprised by a knock on the door, followed by cheery Christmas greetings from the entire band. The text has a strong rhythm befitting a musical theme, and special sound effects are indicated by larger display type. The animals naturally have the signature hilarious expressions that Boynton does so well, and they wear a variety of snappy band uniforms. Santa appears in the parade, of course, as a rhino in a furry, red costume playing a tiny trumpet. Younger children will learn the names of the instruments the animals play, and any adult readers who are marching-band alums will enjoy pointing out their favorite musical instruments. Boynton's buoyant text and comical characters march to their own inimitable drummer. (Picture book. 2-5)

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

Great book- makes the tablet so family friendly!

The kids (and Mommy) are huge Boynton fans! This was excellent and thrilled from ages 1-5. They loved hearing the different intruments as the parade went by, and I pretty much have to read it at bedtime everynight! I have a ton of Boynton books around the house, but this was the first nookbook. It will not be our last!

    Great!

I am so glad that Sandra made this intentionally as an ebook. The sound and colors are great on the Nook Tablet!

When Sandra Boynton narrates her own stories they can come across as a little flat and somewhat monotone. But, not with this book. Christmas Parade is an excellent ebook. The illustrations are done in the usual fun style and the music enhances the narration.

It is one of my daughter's favorite books. We read it daily.

Highly recommended for younger children and parents.

    great christmas book

My boys are 2 and 3 and they loved this book this Christmas season. The author reads the book and the boys loved all the musical sounds that accompanied the story. I must say I enjoyed it as much as they did as I do all Sandra Boyton books!
