Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Impossible to read without breaking into song, the lyrics to this classic tune translate into a warm and buoyant picture book. Many "Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow" will soon be caught up in the song's feel-good sentiment as captured in the fetchingly festive artwork. Using a close-up perspective, Barrette (Thanks for Thanksgiving) makes readers feel like a part of the several families shown gathering in their cozy alpine-village homes for favorite holiday customs. Her playfully cherubic cast, reminiscent of Diane Goode's characters, exudes loads of cheer. Ages 3-7. (Oct.)

Gr 1-4-This seasonal favorite is enhanced by Barrette's colorful, cheery watercolor-and-ink illustrations. Her depictions of a snowy village, populated by pink, pixielike people and cute animals, express joy and wonder as folks gather together for the holiday. Bundled up families trudge through the snow with puppies at their heels. Doves and cats coo and nuzzle beneath the mistletoe, and polar bears gaze with awe at Santa's sleigh soaring through the air with miles of presents in tow. The text is arranged with short phrases on each page, inviting readers to sing aloud as each scene unfolds. This is a terrific selection for group sharing or individual reading.-Linda Israelson, Los Angeles Public Library

Kirkus Reviews
Kids from one to 92 have enjoyed this classic Christmas song since it was first recorded in the mid-1940s. This illustrated version of the song takes a fanciful approach, showing the residents of a snow-bound village preparing for the holiday. Barrette illustrates each line of the song with different families or children from the village, including children of different ethnicities. Some more realistic illustrations show the warmth of the villagers extending the hand of friendship to one another (including their pets); other scenes show warmly dressed little angels floating above the village singing the Yuletide carols or Santa and his elves in action. The illustrations of Santa and the reindeer in flight offer intriguing perspectives: polar bears looking up at the sleigh in one spread and the viewer looking down at Santa's landing in another. The lines of the song are well-matched to each illustration in general, although the chestnuts roasting on the open fire in the first spread are barely visible in the background and Jack Frost is just a hint of ice nipping at the noses of two little boys. The musical notation is not included. (Picture book. 3-6)
