All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
It has become patently obvious that San Angelo, Texas' Los Lonely Boys have arrived at their true mainstream place in the musical order when they can release a Christmas album on Sony. And what's not to like? Everything the brothers Garza play is infected with pure bluesy groove and roots rock verve. The ten songs here are Garza-ized takes on Christmas standards: "Jingle Bells," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Away in a Manger," "Feliz Navidad," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Carol of the Bells," and "Silent Night." The latter two are fine instrumentals. "Carol of the Bells,'" especially, is a deeply satisfying guitar and percussion workout that embraces not only hard ...

"Carol of the Bells,'" especially, is a deeply satisfying guitar and percussion workout that embraces not only hard rhumba drumming, but funk, Mexican folk music, and screaming blues-rock. Hopefully, their version of "Run Rudolph Run" will make Chuck Berry proud, with its rumbling upright piano and bassline, and Henry's guitar offering his best modern read of Berry's instrumental innovation on the I-IV-V progression. But the real highlights here are the two originals that open the set. "I've Longed for Christmas" is a bona fide new seasonal tune with its warmth, soulful wah-wah guitar, and laid-back drum kit shuffling around a slippery groove. The brothers sing unfettered joyful harmonies about giving, peace, love, and joy -- and the celebration of Christ's birth. "She'll Be My Everything for Christmas" is inspired by Fats Domino's New Orleans brand of rhythm & blues with loose strolls up and down the keyboard and his celebration of love between two people. The relaxed, back to basics approach works well. So if you're looking for something else to put in your holiday selection, Christmas Spirit is an excellent bet , not only to inspire cheer in yourself, but to delight your guests as well.

    Texican Christmas - in October!

We've all got favorite versions of Christmas carols - preferences formed over the years. Sometimes we just don't hear a new version.

Get ready to open your ears and mind to some new old favorites!

Los Lonely Boys, along with some of their family, some guest musicians, and some mysterious singers aka The Elf Choir - deliver a wonderful musical Christmas package for us all!

A special thanks to Michael Ramos, and Rick and Mark Del Castillo for their performance support!

Continuing the musical growth from Forgiven, you'll hear additional lyric development as well as some outrageously beautiful harmonizing.

8 old favorites, and 2 brand new songs - let's get started!

Comments in track list order:

I've Longed For Christmas. A new classic that you'll swear you've heard before. Beautiful and sweet. Jojo's kids do a great job of making the end of the song feel like a whole choir is assisting.

She'll Be My Everything (For Christmas). A 1950's feeling rock tune - very dance-able. Sweet with some really neat lyrics.

Run Run Rudolph. Needs to be made into a music video! Henry is channeling Chuck Berry with all the rambunctious fun of the early 1960s. Whoever organized the album did a great job backing this up against She'll Be My Everything by the way.

Cancion de las Campanas (Carol of the Bells). A gorgeous instrumental. Starts with an acoustic performance, smoothly moving to electric guitar and even including a drum solo from Ringo, you'll want to play this one again and again for its musical richness.

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. Hooray! A bluesy twist on this song for sure!

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Oh yeah! A very solid rockin' version of this song. Santa Claus is comin', baby, well he's comin' to town! Great candidate for a live performance.

Away In A Manger. Missed the smooth power of More Than Love? Give this one a listen, then. This one, performed acapella, would just be so very perfect! I'm really wishing for a live version as we head into the 2008 holiday season and the shows between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Feliz Navidad. The story is that the original tracks were found and that the song is the same one we've had for years. But it feels so new! One of LLB's strengths is always the live performances; Manny Marroquin's elegant mixing skills give us a chance to rediscover an old song all over again.

Jingle Bells. WHO IS THAT VOICE? (smile) Ringo, well done. Listen toe the background on this one. It will make you smile as you close your eyes and see Jojo pointing out someone who is not singing with a big smile on his face. And we get another kazoo solo! Just great fun!

Silent Night. The perfect ending for the album. Slow and wonderfully sweet. Completely appropriate for use in a church service in my opinion. The boys seem completely engaged in making this song shine!

As a long time fan, I'm THRILLED to hear Henry get turned loose to play long passages, and I'm OVERJOYED that we've got some very clearly Spanish rhythms making it back in the songs.

Highly and energetically recommended. Put this in rotation in your regular Christmas music stack, and watch your guests perk up!

And, as always, family friendly and performed with reverence. God bless.

A Must Have this Holiday Season

For the 1st ever Los Lonely Boys' Christmas Album, it went above my expectations. Classic Christmas songs infused with the originality of our down home Texican Rock and Roll.

This is truly a Christmas Album like no other. The harmonies on "I've Longed For Christmas" are unmistakeable! I love that they are making it a family affair and including not only their children, but the extended, on the road, familia as well. And including the Del Castillo Brothers was genius, shear genius!!!!

Simply said...I...Love...It!!!!
