Overview

Adapted from the original bestselling novel, The Christmas Sweater: A Picture Book is the story of a young boy who finds the true meaning of Christmas in the most unlikely of places. Eddie wants a bicycle for Christmas, but his mother knits him a homemade sweater instead. His disappointment is obvious, but a magical journey makes Eddie realize that the sweater is far more than it seems. Ultimately it teaches him that the true meaning of a gift is that it is given with love.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The radio and TV host's debut picture book repackages his adult novel of the same name into a short parable. Eddie wants a bike for Christmas, but his twinkly-eyed grandpa tells him that he doesn't see a bike in the boy's future, but rather a Christmas sweater. When a disappointed Eddie takes a dream journey to a snowy forest, he opens a package containing the sweater and is whisked into a procession of idyllic Christmastime moments with his mother, father and grandpa. In the morning, it's the sweater he's excited about, not the shiny bike. Dorman's warm, vintage-style digital illustrations complement Beck's unambiguous message. Ages 4–7. (Oct.)
From The Critics
Eddie looks forward to getting a new bicycle for Christmas. He sends his grandpa to scout out the possibility. Wise Grandpa prepares Eddie for the possibility of a sweater instead. He says, "See, when a gift is made by hand, all of that person's love is captured in it." In dreams, Eddie finds a sweater in the forest and while wearing it, sleds with his Dad, finishes a gingerbread house with his mother, and rides in a sleigh with Grandpa who looks like Santa Claus. Eddie realizes that the magic of love knitted into a sweater does outweigh the excitement of a new bicycle. On Christmas morning he sees the new bicycle but searches for something else. His mom hands him the present he is looking for. He opens the sweater, remembers his dream, and gives Mom a hug with love. This book was adapted by Chris Schoebinger from the adult novel by the popular radio and TV host. The colored illustrations capture the boy's world and his varied emotions. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman

ON CHRISTMAS EVE, Eddie shook his snow globe one last time and placed it on the dresser beside his bed. He watched the snowstorm swirl and thought about the one gift he wanted most for Christmas—a new bicycle. As the final snowflakes drifted away, he heard a soft knock at his door.

Eddie turned and saw his grandfather tiptoeing into the room. He was wearing his favorite fluffy red hat—a hat that used to make Eddie think his grandfather was Santa Claus himself.

“What did you find, Grandpa? Am I getting the bike I want?” he asked.

Grandpa looked around to make sure they were alone. Then he whispered, “Well, I snooped around the house and I have good news and bad news. What do you want first?”

“Hmm.” Eddie frowned. “You’d better give me the bad news first.”

Grandpa cleared his throat. “The bad news is that I didn’t find a bike.”

Eddie’s heart sank. He knew that children don’t always get what they want for Christmas, but he’d tried to be extra good all year long. “Don’t I deserve a bike?” he thought to himself. Eddie’s head fell back onto his pillow. He looked up at the stars on his ceiling and mumbled, “So, what’s the good news?”

“Ah, yes.” Grandpa’s eyes lit up. “The good news is that you’re getting a Christmas sweater.”

“Huh?” Eddie sat up in disbelief. “A Christmas sweater? That’s the good news? A boring, useless, itchy sweater? I don’t want any sweater, but especially not a Christmas sweater!”

“Shhhhhh!” Grandpa hushed him. “Eddie, sometimes a sweater isn’t just a sweater. I still remember the year my mother knitted one for me. It brought me magic for years and years. Still does. See, when a gift is made by hand, all of that person’s love is captured in it. Once they give it to you, that love turns into Christmas magic… .”

Eddie’s thoughts began to drift away as his grandpa’s words became softer and softer.

When Eddie opened his eyes, his grandfather was gone. And so was his bedroom. He was in a beautiful forest sparkling with a fresh blanket of Christmas snow. Up ahead he saw a clearing where a single present sat alone. He walked over to it and read the gift tag.

To Eddie. What your heart needs most for Christmas.

Curious, Eddie opened the gift. Inside was a handmade Christmas sweater. Eddie was disappointed, but he was so cold that he decided to put it on. It was a perfect fit. Suddenly, the snow around him swirled in all directions, just as if he were inside his snow globe.

When the snow cleared, Eddie discovered that he was sledding with his father. They both laughed and hung on tight as the sled jumped off a small hill and soared through the sky.

“Are you having fun, Eddie?” his father asked.

Eddie looked down at his magical Christmas sweater. “This is the best day ever!” Then Eddie gave his dad a big hug and the snow started to swirl again.

When it settled, Eddie was sitting with his

mother at their kitchen table. They had just finished building a gingerbread house. “How did we do?” she asked.

Eddie licked some frosting from his fingers and said, “We’re a great team, Mom.” He thought about the Christmas sweater he was wearing. Could a simple sweater really have Christmas magic? Suddenly, the snow swirled again.

When it cleared, Eddie was sitting inside a sleigh with his grandpa.

“Eddie,” Grandpa asked, “want to take a ride?”

“Sure,” Eddie cheered. “Do I need anything?”

Grandpa hugged him tight and said, “You’ve got your Christmas sweater. Looks like you have everything you’ll ever need.”

Eddie eyed the candy canes in the sleigh. “Grab one,

Eddie!” With a twinkle in his eye, Grandpa called out to each reindeer by name and yelled, “Now dash away, dash away, dash away, all!”

The sleigh lurched forward and Eddie sat up in his bed. He’d dreamed the whole night away. It was Christmas morning and the smell of his mother’s pancakes filled the house. He jumped out of bed, scampered downstairs . . . and stopped dead in his tracks. Under the tree was the bike he’d waited for all year. But instead of running to it, Eddie slowly searched the room with his eyes.

“Eddie,” his mother asked. “Is something wrong?”

“Go ahead and pinch yourself, son,” his father said excitedly. “This isn’t a dream. Go jump on your new bike!”

Eddie shook his head. “The bike is great, but I was looking for something else.”

His family looked at one another with puzzled faces.

With all the sincerity in his heart, he explained, “I was really hoping to get a Christmas sweater. I mean, a bike is just a bike, but a Christmas sweater can be so much more.”

Eddie’s mom crouched down behind the tree and pulled out a single box. It looked familiar. “Is this what you’re searching for?” she asked. Eddie smiled from ear to ear.

He reached for the box, opened it, and eagerly pulled out his Christmas sweater. He stared at it and then put it on over his pajamas. It was a perfect fit. He felt true warmth for the first time in his life.

Eddie thought about his dream and about the message on the gift tag.

What your heart needs most for Christmas.

It gave him a magical idea.

He walked over to his mother and gave her the best present in the world—the one thing that her heart also needed the most. …

A big, warm hug from her son.

“Thank you, Mom,” he whispered.

“I love you.”

As Eddie’s father looked on proudly, Grandpa picked up a snow globe and gave it a gentle shake. As the flakes settled, he called out to Eddie and, with a familiar twinkle in his eye, slipped a single candy cane into his grandson’s pocket.

    Fantastic Read; even better gift!

Yesterday I received an advanced order copy of Glenn Beck¿s book. Last night instead of watching mindless TV programs I began reading it. I have only read two other books cover to cover in one sitting, Living at the Summit by Dr. Tom Hill and The Little Gold Book of YES!Attitude by Jeffrey Gitomer but last night I read The Christmas Sweater cover to cover. Glenn Beck is well known for his political commentary and should anyone decide NOT to read his book because of his beliefs, it will be their loss. This is an amazing novel, not a political commentary, about a 12 year old boy who experiences rough times growing up and how he responds or better, reacts. It is a book about growing up, about believing in yourself, about having faith, and about change. The book brought back memories of people, places, things and events in my own life as a youngster that I had completely forgotten about. The book is based in part about Glenn¿s life as he explains at the end. It is a very compelling read that I not only recommend everyone reading but the book would make a fantastic Christmas gift especially if you get the collector¿s hard cover edition. Gymbeaux

A lesson we need to revisit

Glenn Beck didn't reinvent the wheel or come up with a message that has never been heard. That would be impossible. He did, instead give us the gift of a life lesson which is written from the heart. In a world filled with a sense of entitlement and having to have the next big thing, isn't it time that we reflect on what really matters? I believe so.
The Christmas Sweater reminds us that it isn't about the latest techno toy or sports car. It is about so much more and so much less. Well done Glenn Beck.

    An Important Message

This book touched me deeply. I am a cancer survivor and the message of this book was deeply understood. I am giving this book to as many people as I can afford to this year. If you don't understand the book at first read, save it until you need an attitude adjustment or a source of comfort in hard times. We all need to recognize what is most important in life and anything that can help us do that is of great worth. That is where this book is such a pearl. Deeply personal and poiniant, the message is much needed and timely for a world in turmoil.

    Don't listen to haters

I am writing to support Glenn Beck. His book is optimistic in these difficult times. It should not matter that he is opinionated on his TV show, and that he is not writing something terribly original. What matters is his desire to change the world and change people for the better. We can be happy in these tough economic times. Material things do not really matter in the short or long run! There are always going to be those who do not like him and will not like this book because they are suspicious of those who want to help others. That's too bad. They will never stop the good people of this world... those who know that despite the haters, they WILL make a difference. Ignore those who cannot see the goodness in his book.

    The Christmas Sweater

This is a magnificent book to share with your family and specially your grandchildren. It is very emotional and I highly recommend it. Some postings in this site are quite unjustified in their comments and they should be ashamed. Glenn, you have great followers despite some of these lunatics that attack you.

The Wonder Years and The Five People You Meet in Heaven

I borrowed this from the library after hearing so much about it on, what else, "The Glen Beck Radio Show." It is a quick read... however, as soon as I started it, all I could think of was "The Wonder Years" TV show w/ Fred Savage. Glen's writing sounded like the narrator of "The Wonder Years" episodes, which I loved... and which had far, far better stories than this book has. I found it trite, predictable, a knock-off of the usual Christmas themes as "It's A Wonderful Life." Somehow, I never got the impression that Eddie/Glen ever really "got it." The reader could see right through the imaginary Ralph, aka his Dad, aka God. If you are looking for this kind of read, I would recommend Mitch Albom's books, which elicited far more emotion than this Glen Beck book. I give it a thumbs down. Instead, buy or borrow from the library these from Mitch Albom: "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," "Tuesdays with Morrie," and "For One More Day." They are well-written and emotional. Just my opinion, of course.

    Awesome book...

Glenn Beck can be kind of obnoxious sometimes, but with politics and religion aside, this was an awesome book. I wasn't expecting it to be so good. Who knew that he could create a masterpiece out of his own expieriences in life? It was very inspiring to me to become a better person. I recommend this book to everyone. I liked it so much, I went and bought 3 more copies to give away for christmas presents!

The Christmas Sweater - Glenn Beck

This has to be one of the most meaningfully, well-written novels I have read in my life. In times such as these, this novel came on the market in a timely way - more than Glenn Beck could have ever predicted or premeditated. I have given this novel as gifts and assigned it to all of my 8th-grade English students - both regular and honors. Not only does the story have a strong message, but it also has so many levels at which a reader can read and a teacher can teach!

The Christmas Sweater - A Touching Story of Redemption

Glenn Beck's writing style is similar to his speaking style on his radio program: straight-forward with a touch of cynicism. Easy to read story with short chapters, compelling the reader to continue to the next chapter, and the next and the next. Based on his childhood, it's a story of suffering and redemption centered around his rejection of a gift from his mother, and his coming to terms with the self-created storms in his life. There are life lessons to be learned from this story. The earlier in life the better. Whether you agree with Beck's political positions and commentary or not, this book will touch your heart.

    The Christmas Sweater

A fantastic book written by a fantastic guy. The book is genuine, like it's author. The book leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy, like it's author. Mainly, the book has real meaning to it. It touches the heart in many ways. Brings us back to our childhood, through the words of Glenn Beck in going back to his. The ending knocked my socks off. I plan to read this book again.....soon! Great Christmas reading or anytime reading. I recommend this book most heartily! :)

    FANTASTIC BOOK!

I was given a beautifully bound and author signed copy from my brother for my birthday and it is my favorite gift. This book touches your heart, mind and soul and provides a wonderful opportunity for reflection, introspection and a change of heart. One can choose to make life altering changes after reading this special little book. Mr. Beck has a way with words and most descriptions of circumstances are painted vividly in expressive writing. I found myself giggling, smiling, tearing up and actually sobbing. I appreciate it when someone can stir such human emotions where one discovers genuine feelings of their own. I plan to give this book to those in my life that I love dearly. One time or another in our lives we will all need forgiveness, grace and atonement either for ourselves or others. Thank you Mr. Beck for sharing such a personal tale.
