Christopher Columbusby Melissa Nathan
Growing up in Genoa, Italy, Christopher Columbus studied geography and astronomy before going to sea in the Mediterranean region as a young man. He gained the support of the royalty of Spain and set sail under the Spanish flag with the idea of traveling to Asia by a westward route. Columbus landed in the Caribbean, thinking he had reached the eastern edge of Asia. His legacy is a complicated one that includes spearheading the European presence in the Americas and initiating the exploitation of the land and indigenous peoples of the "New World."
