Noted garden authority Lloyd (The Cottage Garden) has spent a lifetime experimenting with plants in his Sussex, England, garden as well as observing plants throughout the world. Here he presents over 300 perennials and his thoughts on them in lively, keen, and highly opinionated prose. The plants are arranged alphabetically by their botanical (Latin) name, and the index also avoids common plant names, so this is a book for the serious-minded gardener. Lloyd's descriptions focus on characteristics of different varieties within each class, habits of the plants, and some cultural advice. Welcome attention is given to grasses and tropical plants of which the author is especially fond. Eight sections of photographs, many taken in the author's garden by Jonathan Buckley, are outstanding and give the reader ideas on how to combine perennials in the border. There is also a brief glossary of botanical terms. Although this is an excellent book, keep in mind that the plants profiled are ones that are known to perform well in Great Britain; some may not grow well here in the United States or even be available. Following an introduction in which he explains what perennials are and their particular advantage in the garden, he describes the plants and assesses their good and less good points. In the course of his alphabetical journey from Acanthus to Zigadenus, he touches on large and small genuses, both common and obscure, describing the height and habit of the plants, garden situations in which they have worked well for him, and any pests or diseases they are particularly susceptible to.
