Editorial Reviews

Anna Lou Goldblatt
This book covers all aspects of pain, including concepts, physiology, evaluation, treatment, and documentation. It is a new edition edited by physical therapists for physical therapists. The editors wish to reinforce the importance of physical therapy in management of patients with chronic pain. It is their hope that pain management courses will become an integral part of physical therapy education in the future. The book is well written and provides a comprehensive view of chronic pain. The primary audience for this book is physical therapy students and their teachers. The secondary audience is practicing physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and other healthcare professionals interested in chronic pain management. There are 14 contributing authors who are all credible through experience and/or publications. The book has a soft cover and it is well illustrated with tables, some black-and-white photographs, and many excellent sample forms. There are abundant references at the end of each chapter and three excellent appendixes. The first appendix provides sample forms of pain questionnaires and surveys. The second is a proposed pain curriculum for physical therapy and/or occupational therapy students. The last appendix lists support groups for patients with chronic pain. This book is well written and edited. Each section is similar in depth and style, which makes reading easy. The basic nature of the book makes it appropriate for students or practitioners and it would be an excellent textbook. It has many case studies, sample forms, and examples of appropriate responses to and interpretation of common comments made by patients in chronic pain management programs.
