Chronicle of the Indian Wars: From Colonial Times to Wounded Knee

( 1 )

Overview

From the moment that Europeans landed on America's shores, they engaged in bloody conflict with the natives they encountered. Tensions and hostilities bred in the colonial wars with the Spanish, English, French, and Dutch would lead inevitably to the later wars of the removal period, skirmishes on the western Plains, and, ultimately, the confrontation at Wounded Knee. Now, captured here in the words of those who lived it, is the epic, violent history of a landscape turned red - through fear, greed, and fatal ...

Now, captured here in the words of those who lived it, is the epic, violent history of a landscape turned red - through fear, greed, and fatal misunderstanding. Each chapter in this sweeping narrative outlines and focuses on a particular war or period, re-creating its conflicts through hundreds of immediate sources - the diaries and letters of military commanders, captivity narratives and missionary journals, U.S. Army reports and treaties, and Native American speeches and oral accounts. Here are the authentic voices of Chief Joseph, Black Hawk, Sitting Bull, and Crazy Horse; the accounts given by George Rogers Clark, Kit Carson, William Tecumseh Sherman, and George Armstrong Custer; as well as the experiences of the common soldier who labored under brutal conditions along the frontier, and Native American warriors fighting to the death to preserve their threatened way of life. Additional features make this volume the perfect reference. Included in each chapter are brief biographies of individual native and white leaders; excerpts from hundreds of historical documents; feature boxes on such topics as the conduct of warfare along the frontier, Native American beliefs, the fate of a captive, and treaties that were made and abandoned; maps of tribal locations and battle campaigns; and historical drawings and photographs. A detailed chronology highlights all of the significant events in Native-white relations from the sixteenth-century Spanish exploration of North America through the aftermath of Wounded Knee. Like no other single volume, Chronicle of the Indian Wars brings to life the entire history

From the movie screen to the printed page, Native American culture and history have earned a significant place in the country's imagination. Now, in a fast-paced and authoritative narrative sure to become a standard reference in the field, historian Alan Axelrod looks back at 400 years of a violent and tragic struggle as the Indians fought to protect their lands from white colonizers. Photos, line drawings and maps.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
To many Americans, ``Indian Wars'' connotes the ongoing battles in the West during the late 19th century. Actually, native North Americans and whites were in conflict from early encounters with Spanish, French, Dutch and English, leading to four centuries of warfare on some level. Historian Axelrod ( Art of the Golden West ) offers a comprehensive account of the Indian wars, major and minor (some of the latter may be remembered only as footnotes to local history). Furnishing brief profiles of leaders who fought on each side, he discusses captivity, treaties and the reservation system. Well-documented and smoothly written, this is a valuable reference work for students of history. Illustrations not seen by PW. Military Book Club selection. (Jan.)
Library Journal
Axelrod, the author of a number of books on the West and the Civil War, offers a comprehensive popular account of the Euro-American conquest of Native Americans. His book is nicely illustrated and contains interesting sidebars. It also provides an extensive bibliography of secondary sources. However, quotes from primary sources are not cited. Most of these quotes deal with particularly lurid aspects of murder and mayhem. Because Axelrod is featured in The Wild West , a ten-hour Warner television series, there may be some demand. This is recommended for libraries seeking a popular update to works such as Robert M. Utley and Wilcomb Washburn's The American Heritage History of the Indian Wars ( LJ 11/15/77).-- Daniel Liestman, Seattle Pacific Univ. Lib.
Joe Collins
This extensive volume comes along at exactly the right time--interest in native American customs and history is at its peak. Axelrod's book is objective; at no point does he throw blanket condemnation at either race for the ongoing conflict. In fact, many of the wars chronicled here are caused by misunderstandings like accidental shots fired and misplaced anger, and peace treaties are usually broken by mistake. The chronicles themselves begin with the Spanish conquest of South and Central America, then move on through minor skirmishes on the Eastern seaboard during colonial times into the massive French and Indian War, and climax with the wars for the West--when it finally began to dawn on warrior and settler alike that until the Indians had specific lands reserved for them, the wars would never end. Valuable historical documents along with maps and pictures are also used to illustrate exactly what these wars were all about. Ultimately, the book is not only informative and thought-provoking, but just like the hunting grounds the proud Indian once called home--it's breathtaking.

Axelrod's 'Chronicle of the Indian Wars' covers just about every Amerindian vs. European conflict that ever took place in the United States from 1492 to 1891. The author is brief and thorough, but his account suffers from his dry, colorless listing of dull facts awkward, cluttered sentences and over-reliance on uncited primary sources. The best history writers engage the reader's interest, and keep it. Mr. Axelrod failed to interest me for more than minutes, even though the Indian Wars fascinate me. Read Dee Brown's 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee' instead of this failure.
