this is a charming collection of short pieces that trace a jewish family's progress from immigrant status to mainstream american life. all is complicated by the father of the family who makes his living as a professional card player and racketeer. the book is very warm in its ethnicity. the aroma of simmering chicken soup will surround the reader with goodness on almost every page -- and the stories and legends will warm the heart.
